Figure Overlap of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer in smokers In epidemiology studies of chronic smokers, spirometric testing shows that about 20% have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).3 This approach gives three groups of chronic smokers for comparison: those with normal lung function, COPD, and lung cancer.
