ORDERING RATOINAL NUMBERS Negatives on a Number Line Hint: Remember that you can change fractions to decimals by dividing!

- 3. Write down 3 things that you notice about a number line that includes negatives.

Negatives on the number line: The farther away from zero a negative number is, the smaller the number is. Ex: -6.7 < -6.4… We know this is true because -6.7 has a higher absolute value, meaning it is farther from zero. Try one: Which is greater, -8.15 or -8.2? Explain. In a set of negative numbers, if you order them from least to greatest, each number should get closer to zero as you list them. Ex: -60.5, -44, -43.9, -43.5, -20, -7.5, -7.3, -1, 0 Try one. Order these numbers least to greatest: -11.2, -11.7, -11.8, -11.85, -11.71

Practice with a partner: Put the following numbers in order least to greatest. -7.3, -8.1, -7 ½ , -7 ¼
