Year Year 2 SATs

Introduction Now that your child is in Year 2, they will be assessed at the end of the year using SATs results along side teacher assessment. The aim of this session is to ensure the children are given the best support in order to prepare them for the assessment process in Year 2 Working together we can give our children the best chance to be successful and also equip them with skills that they can build on year after year.

Teacher Assessment Although children sit the SATs papers, the overall judgement is Teacher Assessment Teachers look at a range of evidence from across the curriculum to support their judgements

The Year Ahead… This year, Year 2 SATs will take place from during May 2019. Your child will be given a scaled score – just like their half term assessments - where 100 is equal to working at ‘Age Related Expectations’. These tests are used alongside teacher assessment to report a final assessment for your child Mathematics Test 1: Arithmetic Test 2: Reasoning Reading Test 1: Shorter extract text Test 2: Longer extract text Writing Collection of work across the year Spelling and Grammar Test

Teacher Assessment How do they judge? Interim Framework provides key criteria from across the curriculum Children then graded as : Working towards the national standard Working at the national standard Working at greater depth within the national standard

What can you do to help? Read, read, read! Encourage them to record their opinions in their reading diaries Look through the documents given and support your child with these at home through games or mini activities Handwriting and spelling practice Attendance and punctuality

English Reading Paper The children have 30 mins (approx) to read the texts and to answer questions about the test The paper tests their skills of reading quickly, using the text to answer the questions, give opinions – but use the text to back up the opinion

English Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (SPaG) Paper 1 Spelling 20 spellings 15 minutes Paper 2 Question Paper 20 minutes to answer 19 questions

Maths Tests There are 2 Maths Papers Paper 1 Arithmetic 20 minutes to complete 25 questions Paper 2 Reasoning 35 minutes (no calculator) 31 questions

What You Can Expect From Us During Year 2, teachers may well flag up areas of learning in which your child would benefit from some extra practice, as well as completing their normal homework such as reading and learning spellings. We will always be on hand to give you advice and resources. We will meet with you regularly; to discuss your child’s progress individually but also as a group of parents together. It is so important that we work together.

How You Can Help With Maths Maths Support Knowing their timetables – if you know your timetables children can use them accurately and quickly for multiplication and division. To help you child learn their timetables (up to X12) Formal method for the four operations practice: it is important that your child can complete methods accurately. How YOU Can Help With Reading It is so important that your child reads every day. Ask your child to read aloud to you, and then ask them questions about what they have read If your child doesn’t enjoy reading aloud to you, suggest that they read independently and then talk with you about their reading. Read a variety of different texts i.e. newspapers, recipe books, instruction booklets, non-fiction texts Read aloud to your child whilst your child follows the text: listening is an important part of reading; it will help your child learn the importance of punctuation and reading with expression.

Key Reading Texts Your child will take part in daily guided reading sessions. Each half term has a key text which children will dive into and explore in depth. In order to support your child in their reading, please ensure they are reading every day and that you are asking them questions about what they have read.

How YOU Can Help With Grammar, Spelling & Punctuation Help your child learn Year 2 spellings. When reading to and/or with your child discuss the use of inverted commas to mark speech, the use of parenthesis (brackets) to add additional information, the use of capital letters etc.

Final Top Tips! Tip 5: Encourage your child to believe in themselves, ‘you can do it!’ Tip 6: Remind your child that the tests are important, but that they are not the only way they are to be measured. We don’t want child panicking or worried, we want them to be prepared and to enjoy the challenge Tip 7: Approach a subject from lots of different angles. Software, games, activities, books, flash cards and practical applications all help? make the revision time at home as fun and interactive as possible. Tip 8: It is easier said than done, BUT do not put your child under too much pressure. Have fun – they will find things easier to remember if they recall the good times they had learning. Tip 9: This is a great opportunity to prepare for their next step on their educational journey – to be really skilled for Key Stage Two Tip 1: Remember your child’s education is a partnership. We are here to support you so please do speak to the staff. Tip 2: Support your child with homework tasks and daily reading. Tip 3: Encourage your child to work to speed. Try timed recall of timetables in the car/journey to school. Set mini challenges for example – ‘can you find the word on the page that means ‘dangerous’ you have 1 minute - go!’ Tip 4: Make sure your child is aware that getting stuck is not a problem. Move on and give them another challenge and come back to the hard ones at the end and/or go through it together.

Most importantly……… Tip 10 Ensure your child goes to bed, and goes to sleep by approximately 8.00. Ensure your child has breakfast and is well hydrated. Ensure your child comes to school every day , and arrives on time, at 8.20. This will help your child to start the day well at 8.30.
