Baby Safety Zone What is it? Hello. I’d like to start by talking to you about babies. What do babies need? They need love, of course, they need food, they need nappy changes, they need sleep (ideally) and they need to be safe while they’re sleeping. The number one thing that new mum’s worry about, according to a US survey, is whether their baby will be safe while sleeping. Good morning, I am Dr Corinne Cortese and my teammate is John Meurer and today we would like to present to you the Baby Safety Zone. While it would be great if babies would sleep in their cots or beds, most new mothers (or even second or third time mothers) will be happy if their baby sleeps at all, even if this means the baby sleeps on the lounge. But of course, this poses a safety problem and this is how the invention was born. John went to visit his daughter Summer one weekend and when Summer’s mum came to open the door for him, John watched sleeping Summer roll over and off the side of the lounge. Fortunately he caught her, but the idea for the Safety Zone was born. So what is it? The Baby Safety Zone is a portacot, a sleep zone, and a play pen all in one. It allows baby to sleep on the lounge, rest on the lounge and play on the lounge while being protected from falling off. It also doubles as a play pen to allow the baby to play on the floor while mum or dad attends to the house hold chores. Now, how does it work…

How does it work? MUST CLICK SLIDE TO START VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The actual mechanics and engineering that is behind this invention is best explained using this short video. MUST CLICK SLIDE TO START VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who is it for? Young families Cluttered families Travelling families This product is suitable for young families, of course, because it provides a sleep solution for babies and small toddlers who just won’t sleep in their own bed, especially at nap times. This product is for families that might be space-poor and are looking to get their clutter off the floor – it can be used as a substitute for bouncers, playmats, and similar cots that clutter up many lounge room floors This product is also for travelling families. Moving around and visiting with babies is hard work. This invention makes life a little bit easier because the sleeping arrangements for the baby are facilitated. One of the innovations we are working on, and seeking to update our patent for, is to make this product more even more portable.

Our competition…And why the Safety Zone is better! Where do we fit? Our competition…And why the Safety Zone is better! The Portacot The Safety Zone attaches to a pre-existing frame – Space saver! The Bassinet/Bouncer The Safety Zone does not depend on the size (& growth rate!) of the baby. The Play Pen The Safety Zone can also be used as a play pen There are many competitors all trying to get a share of the baby market! There are millions of baby products, baby safety products and baby sleep products. We have identified our main competitors here in terms of the product, rather than the individual company. There’s the portacot  there are thousands of these on the market, in every shape and style, colour variations, weight variations and so on. We think the SZ is better because the entire unit can be attached to a pre-existing frame (ie a lounge) and put up and down as required. This is a huge space saver and time saver. Also, the SZ requires less material to be carried around (ie the base is the lounge and therefore not part of the portable unit) and is therefore much lighter and more portable. There’s the portable bassinet and the bouncer  these are great concepts and can be very light and portable. BUT, babies outgrow these – quickly! The SZ can be used until whatever age the parent requires. The playpen…  the playpen offers a good alternative for parents who need to get to work around the house while also making sure that their baby is safe. So, we made sure that the Safety Zone also offered this functionality.

Why us? So, why should you pick the Baby Safety Zone? Unique to the market Product patented Value for money Highly developed So, why should you pick the Baby Safety Zone? We offer a product that is unique to the baby market. The product is patented and additions to the patent are about to be added to make it even more lightweight, functional and portable There is value for money in our product because it is competitive, cost-wise, with other similar products but has a longer useful life and greater functionality and therefore usefulness (e.g. a baby will not “outgrow” the Safety Zone, it can double as a playpen, and it is more portable) Our product is highly developed. We have a prototype built, and demonstrations formed and ready to go. What we are lacking is money, and perhaps more importantly the exposure which will help us take the product to the next stage of development. In exchange for someone taking the chance and deciding to work with us on this product, we think there is a real opportunity to make a difference to the safety and wellbeing of babies, and the anxiety levels of parents, while also breaking into a new area of the baby products market. Finally, we would both like to take this opportunity to thank the judges and the rest of the Uniquest and Trailblazer teams for giving us the chance to put this presentation together. It has been an incredibly rewarding and worthwhile experience. Thank you.
