Chapter 8 AED

The Heart A normal heart has electrical impulses that causes the ventricles to contract. This actions allows for the circulation of blood.

Abnormal Rhythm Ventricular Fibrillation-electrical impulses fire at random which can result in collapsing, becoming unconscious and not breathing.

Ventricular Tachycardia The electrical impulses tells the ventricles to contract too quickly.

CARE For each minute a person in need goes without CPR & defibrillation, a person’s chance of survival is decreased by 10%.

AED rules 1. When a cardiac arrest occurs begin CPR and get an AED 2. Do not use alcohol wipes-alcohol is flammable. 3. Do not use pads of an adult on a child younger than 8yrs weighing less than 55lbs unless pediatric pads aren’t available. 4. Do not use pediatric pads on an adult or child over age of 8 yrs or 55 pounds-pediatric pads deliver lower levels of energy.

Rules continued 5. Do not touch person when AED is analyzing. 6. Make sure no one is touching victim before giving shock. 7. Do not defibrillate around flammable material. 8. Do not use in moving vehicle 9. Do not use on someone in contact with water. Move them away from water source.

Even More Rules 10. Do not use on someone wearing a patch. Remove patch with gloved hand. 11. Do not use a cell phone within 6 feet of AED. It will interfere with frequency of AED.

AED on an Adult 1. Check the scene 2. Check the victim-Are you okay? Shoulder tap 3. Call 911-get AED 4. Head tilt chin lift 5. Look, listen and feel for 10 seconds-Not Breathing 6. Turn on AED 7. Expose chest and wipe dry 8. Attach pads-peel off backing, place one pad on upper right chest, other pad left side chest. 9. Plug in connector 10. Let AED analyze-say “Stand Clear” 11. Give shock (if advised to by AED) after telling everyone to STAND CLEAR!!! 12. Perform CPR for about 2 minutes (5 cycles)

AED with child or infant Same as adult EXCEPT Use pediatric pads-if pediatric pads aren’t available use adult pads. PADS CANNOT TOUCH so you might have to put 1 in middle of child/infant’s chest and other 1 in middle of back in between the shoulder pads.

AED and Water You can use in rain or snow BUT Remove person out of or away from water source. Remove all wet clothing Try to shelter from rain Keep pads of AED from getting wet Make sure person is completely dry.

AED and Pacemakers DO NOT PLACE AED PADS DIRECTLY OVER PACEMAKER.

AED and Chest Hair Try to put pads on first. See if it will deliver shock. Only Remove excess hair if AED tells you to check pads. First, try to push pads down firmly and if that doesn’t work use razor to shave hair off.

AED and Metal surfaces You can use on a metal surface however make sure the electrodes are not touching the metal surface.

AED and Jewelry/body piercing Do not place the pads directly over the piercing. You do not have to remove jewelry.
