A positive sentence has no negative words. A negative sentence has a negative word or phrase. You can turn a positive sentence into a negative sentence by adding a negative. Example: Positive sentence: The teacher likes to sing. Negative sentence: The teacher doesn’t like to sing.

Change each positive sentence below into a negative one. The dog is in the backyard. 2. He was at the library on Friday. 3. She will dance in the play. 4. The children were ready to go home.

5. Oliver walked to the corner. 6. I can read anything. 7. The trees will fall over in a storm. 8. They always want to play games.

Correcting Double Negatives A double negative is a sentence that has two negative words. Example: She didn’t buy nothing. In the example there are two negative words: didn’t and nothing. Double negatives are incorrect in formal writing. A sentence should have only one negative. The example may be corrected two different ways. Correction 1: She didn’t buy anything. Correction 2: She bought nothing.

Rewrite each sentence below correcting the double negative two ways. 1. The clerk is not saying nothing to us. 2. Carlos doesn’t want no snack. 3. I can’t find no cat under the bed.

4. Mr. Simpson won’t sleep no more. 5. Brittany wasn’t happy with no one.
