April 30, 2013 Ms. Moreau Aim: What literary techniques can we identify in Sara Teasdale’s poem, “Barter”? Opening Task: List three things that make you happy. Explain why you listed them.

Vocabulary Vocabulary: Barter (verb) to trade or exchange things without the use of money 1. What do you think would be some benefits of bartering? Strife (noun) angry disagreement or violent actions 2. What do you think is a common cause of strife among teenagers? Ecstasy (noun) a state of extreme happiness or pleasure 3. Do you think it’s easy to be in a state of ecstasy? Why or why not?

loveliness 1. charmingly or exquisitely beautiful: a lovely flower. 2.having a beauty that appeals to the heart or mind as well  as to the eye, as a person or a face. 3.delightful; highly pleasing: to have a lovely time. 4.of a great moral or spiritual beauty: a lovely character.

“Barter” by Sara Teasdale Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up, Holding wonder like a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like the curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstasy Give all you have been, or could be.
