Topic 3. Don’t you just love a good sale? By Sophia H.

Items And Price Shirt cost= $49.90 Skirt cost= $42.90 Total cost = $92.80

Discount and selling price Discount amount ( 15% mark down) =$13.92 Amount with discount = $78.88 Sales tax amount (8.25%) = $6.51 Total amount paid = $85.39

Clearence And Tax Discount Amount (60% mark down)= $55.68 Amount with discount = $37.12 Tax Amount (8.25%) = $3.06 Total Amount paid = $40.18

Formula Used For Discount And Selling Price On the discount and selling price I used the proportion x 15 $92.80 100 When I solved the proportion, I got x=$13.92, which was the discount. Then I subtracted that from $92.80 to get the amount with the discount, which is $78.88. For the sales tax, I used the proportion x 8.25 $78.88 100 When I solved the proportion, I got x=$6.51, which was the sales tax. Then I added that to $78.88 to get the selling price, which is $85.39

Formula Used For Clearence And Tax The formulas I used to find the clearance and tax was the proportion x 60 $92.80 100 When I solved the proportion, I got x = $55.68. Then I subtracted that from $92.80 to find the price before tax. To find the tax I used the proportion x 8.25 $37.12 100 When I solved this proportion, I got x = $3.06, which was the sales tax, so I added that to $37.12 and got the sales price $40.18

Observations The sales tax should be calculated on the discounted price. Justices items are very pricy. You can’t get mixed up with tax and discounts because you may end up adding the discount amount with the original instead of subtracting.

Percent Applications The percent application is used in the real world because Justice has a sale/clearance nearly every day. Without percent proportions/equations, it would be difficult to calculate the discounted price or the sales tax.

Definitions Discount: The amount you get off of an item. Ex.: 60% off of a car Markdown: The reduction of a price of an item. Ex.: If you get a used car, you might get it for a lower price. Sales tax: A tax on sales. Ex.: If I buy a computer for $400, and the sales tax is $33, then the total amount paid would be $433. Selling price: The total amount of money paid for an item. Ex.: I paid a total of $25,500 on a car, including tax.
