Science Square Activity The Nature of Science Science Square Activity

Work Like a Scientist: Science Square Materials 4 puzzle shapes labeled 1-4 Pencil Scissors Colored paper Each person trace one puzzle piece. Then give it to the next person, until you trace all 4 pieces. Cut out the pieces. Put scissors away Don’t throw scraps away yet! Put puzzle pieces back into bag. Try to arrange your puzzle pieces into a loose fitting square.

Does your square look like this? .

Next Step You will be given an additional puzzle piece. Trace it and pass it on. Use all 5 puzzle pieces to make another square. Once you have the square completed, trace each piece and draw the square into your notebook.

Your new square

How does this activity relate to science? Don’t always assume all the pieces fit together – nature is a puzzle we have not yet solved Trial and error is essential to science. New information may require the old theory to be modified or discarded.

How does this activity relate to science? Our current information may be incomplete and therefore our theories are incorrect Sometimes we get lucky and find the right answer Collaboration, or working with others, can be helpful Once we arrive at the right answer, it makes perfect sense.

If there is time, Write something about yourself in each puzzle piece, like favorite TV show, favorite, sport, favorite ice cream flavor, favorite vacation, and favorite subject. Decorate each piece around your writing. Write two sentences below, about what was easy and what was hard in this activity.

Completing Your Square Glue your square in the center of your construction paper. Write your name, the date, and class period on the front of the construction paper In each piece, answer the following questions: Favorite science experiment What you want to learn this year in science Least favorite thing about science class What makes a good student What makes a good teacher
