VOCABULARY

common nouns This is a noun that names any person, place, thing or idea.

proper nouns A proper noun names a particular, person, place, or thing

Types of Non-Fiction Biographies a story of a person’s life. Biographies are told by a third person Autobiographies tells the story of a person’s life and is written by them Letters written between two people and often share information, thoughts and feelings. Letters are a very personal form of non-fiction Journals records of daily events and the writers thoughts Or Diaries and feeling about them

Types of Non-Fiction (Continued) Essays brief written works based on a particular subject Informational documents we come across in everyday life texts including instructions and newspaper articles Speeches works that are delivered orally to an audience

Why We Communicate? I will run the students through a a couple of questions and ask for their observations on why communication is important

Common and Proper Nouns The main goal of our lessons this week is to work with and recognize common and proper nouns as well as abstract and concrete nouns. For some of you this will be a review and I understand this but it does not hurt to refresh and make sure we have a solid foundation before we move on.

Common and Proper Nouns (Continued) A common noun is a noun that we use with general concepts. Common nouns are not specific for example the words boy, boys, girl and girls are examples of common nouns. Common nouns name general people, places, things or ideas. A proper noun deals with specific people, places, things or idea. For example The Eiffel Tower, The White House, Sara, and Apple Computers.

Absdtract and Concrete nouns An abstract noun is a noun that names something you cannot touch or use your senses to detect like an idea, feeling or concept. A concrete noun is a noun that names something you can touch or use your senses to detect like a house, book or car. In very rare occasions nouns can be both abstract and concrete. For example you have an idea to write a story that is abstract but once you actually write the story it is concrete.

The Big Question for this Unit Each of the six units we will be covering this year have a specific “Big Question” that we will focus on when reading and reviewing material. You might notice that in our vocabulary/spelling we have several words that deal with truth and how to know what is true. For example fact, investigate, prove, test, study and true all deal with determining what truth is.

Vocabulary Group Students will write either a story or individual sentences for each of our vocabulary words. This assignment will be worth 17 points

Computer Group Students will be shown how to log into google and how to create documents. Students will be responsible for their electronic journal and for a Brainpop assignment “Etymology” These assignments will be worth 20 points. 10 points for the electronic journal and 10 points for the Brainpop assignment.

Small Group/Book Group Students will be given a handout to work in small group with me that will be a refresher for most and cover proper and common nouns. This work sheet will be worth 45 points.

Homework There is no specific homework assigned this week and if you use your time wisely you will not have to work at home. Any assignment that you cannot complete in class will be assigned as homework. Students having problems or issues with accessing the internet will have to make arrangements on the days that I tutor to come in and use the computers after school if they are struggling with this specific assignment. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SO. Remember find solutions and not excuses.
