Chapter 1 Notes

Life Science - The study of living things.

Scientific Method 1. State the Problem – Ask a question you need answered.

Scientific Method 1. State the Problem – Ask a question you need answered. 2. Gather Information – Research the Internet, books, encyclopedias

Scientific Method 1. State the Problem – Ask a question you need answered. 2. Gather Information – Research the Internet, books, encyclopedias 3. Form a Hypothesis – A prediction that can be tested.

4. Perform Experiment Variable - what is tested Control - what stays the same

5. Analyze Data – Watch what happens in the experiment. Video: Scientific Method :28 4. Perform Experiment Variable - what is tested Control - what stays the same 5. Analyze Data – Watch what happens in the experiment. 6. Draw Conclusions – Accept or reject hypothesis. 7. Report Results

Law – Statement about nature that is true all the time. Example of Law Law – Statement about nature that is true all the time. Theory – Explanation about nature that is based on experiments.

Metric System

Where does Life Come From? or

The idea that living things come from nonliving things is called spontaneous generation.

Pasteur’s Experiment Louis Pasteur proved that living things can only come from other living things. This is called biogenesis.

Redi’s Experiment Put meat in jars and covered one. Reid's Experiment Redi’s Experiment Put meat in jars and covered one. Maggots appeared only on the uncovered meat.

Video Big Bang theory Oparin’s Theory 1. Billions of years ago the solar system was whirling dust. 2. Earth was made up of many gases. 3. Lighting struck the gases making them combine together. 4. These gases fell into hot seas. Over millions of years they made living things.

Organism - A living thing. Clip :22 Organism - A living thing. They adapt to their environment, reproduce, and have a life span.
