STA wake up using BSS Parameter Update Counter Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/1065r1 May 2018 STA wake up using BSS Parameter Update Counter Date: 2018-05-07 Authors: Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) John Doe, Some Company

May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Abstract In this contribution, we discuss the need to indicate the current value of the BSS Parameter update counter to WUR STAs. In addition, we evaluate several options for such an indication. Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Introduction 802.11ba agreed to use a counter in wake up frames to indicate BSS parameters update “AP indicates a BSS parameter update by incrementing a counter in the wake- up frame.” [1] “A counter subfield of a WUR wake-up frame is defined as an unsigned integer initialized to 0, that increments when a critical update to the PCR’s BSS parameters has occurred. The size of the counter subfield is TBD.” [2] Prior contributions have mentioned that the length of the Counter field may be 1 or 4 bits [4] In order to wake up a STA correctly, the STA needs to know the current value of the BSS Parameter Update Counter (BPUC) In this contribution, we discuss a few options to indicate the current value of BPUC Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

The need to indicate the current BPUC value May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 The need to indicate the current BPUC value What if a WUR STA does not know the current BPUC value When in WUR mode, the STA receives a WUR frame containing a BPUC value, it does not know whether it needs to wake up to listen to the PCR beacons If the STA wakes up, it may be very wasteful in energy cost If the STA doesn’t wake up, it may miss an essential BSS wide parameter update, particularly if it has a very long duty cycle It is easier to inform the STA the current BPUC value prior to the STA enters WUR mode Option 1: The current value of BPUC is provided to the STA using PCR Option 2: The current value of BPUC is derived from an existing counter value Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

Indicating current BPUC value: Option 1 May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Indicating current BPUC value: Option 1 The current value of BPUC can be indicated by the AP using PCR: 1. AP provides the current BPUC value as part of WUR negotiation process: e.g., in WUR Action frames 2. AP provides the current BPUC value as part of the WUR Operation element Advantage of Option 1: Straightforward Disadvantage of Option 1: Might be somewhat repetitive compared to previously defined signaling Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

Indicating current BPUC value: Option 2 (1) May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Indicating current BPUC value: Option 2 (1) The current value of BPUC can also be derived from other Counter values Two existing counters in the 802.11 spec are defined to provide similar function as BPUC AP-CSN (AP Configuration Sequence Number) is defined in 802.11ai, which can be included in general 802.11 beacons Change Sequence is defined in 802.11ah, and is only included S1G beacons (Sub 1 GHz) AP-CSN seems to be more suitable Already defined in general 802.11 beacons Serves very similar purpose as BPUC: AP-CSN is increased if non- dynamic BSS parameters (e.g., TSF timer, TIM) are changed and its function is to inform STAs of critical update to BSS parameters Details are described in Section 11.1.4.3.10 [3] Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

Indicating current BPUC value: Option 2 (2) May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Indicating current BPUC value: Option 2 (2) BPUC may be derived from AP-CSN (1 byte), e.g.: BPUC could be the n LSB of AP-CSN, with n ≥ 1 BPUC could be a compressed version of AP-CSN Advantage of Option 2: AP-CSN is already defined for very similar purposes as that of BPUC; no need to redo the work Disadvantage of Option 2: May need to mandate AP-CSN for WUR capable APs; Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 Conclusion A WUR STA should be informed of the current value of BPUC before it enters WUR mode We discussed two options to indicate the current value of BPUC Option 1: direct indication by the AP, e.g.: As a part of the WUR negotiation process Indicated in WUR Operation element Option 2: BPUC is derived from other counter values, e.g., AP-CSN Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 SP 1 Do you agree that the current value of BPUC (BSS Parameter Update Counter) should be indicated to the STA before it enters WUR mode: Y/N/A: Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital) Xiaofei Wang (InterDigital)

May 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-15/1065r1 May 2018 SP 2 Which option of indicating the current value of BPUC do you prefer? 1: BPUC is indicated as a part of WUR negotiation process 2: BPUC is indicated as a part of WUR Operation element 3. BPUC is indicated both as a part of WUR Operation element and as a part of WUR negotiation process 4: BPUC is derived from another counter, e.g., AP-CSN 5.
