Revision: Equality

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights in 1948 The Second World War saw many people mistreated and abused. Military prisoners were tortured and civilians were imprisoned or murdered. The international community wanted a set of principles to set out the basic human needs that everyone should have. On 10th December 1948 the United Nations (UN) produced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

Amnesty International Amnesty International is a worldwide voluntary movement of people who campaign for human rights. They run campaigns to stop human rights violations. Their vision is of “a world in which every person enjoys all of the rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Equality in Christianity Women should remain silent in the churches . . . they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. St Paul - 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 The parable of the Good Samaritan From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. Acts 17:26 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28 Equality in Christianity Human Rights Declaration: Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Matthew 22:39

Christianity and other religions We will be looking at WHY Christians share their faith with people of other religions or no religion at all. KEYWORD = EVANGELISM Evangelism refers to the practice of relaying information about a particular set of beliefs to others who do not hold those beliefs. The term is often used in reference to Christianity, where the scriptures often describe ‘evangelism’ as "spreading the good news". This led to Missionaries… Proselytising means trying to convert someone to a religious faith.

Exclusive Inclusive Pluralist Christianity = only true religion Everyone has the right to convert others Only Christians will get to heaven They must try to convert everyone to Christianity Inclusive All religions can help people find God Only Christianity has the complete answer Only Christians can be totally sure that they are ‘saved’ They should share their faith with others Pluralist All religions lead to God Bible is not the ‘word of God’ but is an important book They shouldn’t try to convert people. More liberal Christians (such as Quakers) have this view

Christian attitudes towards forgiveness Christians believe in forgiveness & are taught to ‘love your enemies’. Jesus taught that God will judge people for their sins and that people should forgive each other if they expect forgiveness from God. The ‘Lord’s Prayer’ says – ‘Forgive those who trespass against us’. Jesus said when the woman was about to be stoned for adultery “those without sin cast the first stone’. (John 8:7)
