Can Student Teaching Effective? Under the right direction of a cooperating teacher, professional mentor or university faculty member Teachers can learn to implement sound techniques that will equip them for successful careers

Are there Drawbacks? Tannehill and Zakrajsek(1988) found that cooperating teachers give minimal feedback and spend little time observing their student teachers. Schempp (1985) found that student teachers judged their success based on their management skills and classroom control rather than on learning

How can Student Teaching Be Successful? An environment needs to be created which invites and supports learning. Clinical supervision is one method that can be adapted readily to the gymnasium or playing field

Clinical Supervision Clinical supervision as defined by Cogan (1973), is the creation of a helping relationship between the supervisor and the student teacher, in which the supervisor respects the student teacher as a human being.

Clinical Supervision Acheson and Gall’s(1992) more current belief that clinical supervision is a process, a strategy, and a distinctive style of relating to teachers which takes into account both the professional activity and the professional behaviors of the student teacher.

At Task The supervisor records the behavior (task) of a student at regular intervals during a class period For 3 Min. the supervisor watches the student and writes down what he or she does From the data the student teacher can evaluate what the student is doing in class and determine if it represents the whole

Continued.. For example, the student teacher might learn that the student is spending most of the time waiting in lines or listening to instructions. The teacher and the supervisor might then develop a strategy to engage the class in more on-task activity

Verbal Flow Supervisor records the interaction between the students and the teacher. Categories of interaction might include teacher’s questions, students’ answers, students’ questions, teachers answers, praise, and reprimands

Global scan Global scan observation technique is used to give the student teacher general information about what is going on in the gymnasium. A student teacher who is having difficulty with discipline might ask the observer to focus on misbehaving students, the observer would record the actions of the students or the underlying causes.

Ultimate Goal of Clinical Supervision To develop effective, self sufficient teachers who have the ability to analyze their own teaching skills and continue to grow professionally. The use of observation techniques by a supervisor provides objective tools for self-analysis and continued professional growth
