A detailed and accurate tonal pencil study (A4 or A3) from own photograph from the trip to the harbour – 2 hours minimum Artist transcript (A4 or A3) – an accurate copy from a sea study from one of the following artists focusing on their expressive use of mark making using any appropriate media – 2 hours minimum Maggi Hambling John Virtue JMW Turner Extension task: A personal piece of artwork in any media in the style of the artist chosen from own photo of the sea and shore (A3 or A2).

Mark making and the sea - artists Maggi Hambling is a present-day artist who produces works in a range of media and subject matter including painting, installation and sculpture. Part of her body of work includes a series of large expressive paintings using thickly layered mark-making to build up the texture and colours of waves and the sea. Hambling says ‘This sea, the widest of mouths, roaring or laughing, is always seductive. Life and death mysteriously co-exist in the timeless rhythm of the waves.’ How would you describe her work?

Mark making and the sea - artists JMW Turner was an English artist working in the 19th century who is famous for his landscapes and seascapes depicting wild weather conditions in a style known as ‘Romanticism’. His approach was ground breaking at the time due to his expressive mark making and layers of luminous colour using both oil paint and watercolour. Turner’s work went on to influence the group of artists known as ‘the Impressionists’ as he was known as ‘the painter of light’. How would you describe his work?

Mark making and the sea - artists John Virtue is a present-day artist who specialises in monochromatic landscapes – he sees colour as an ‘unnecessary distraction’. In a recent exhibition he focused purely on depicting the sea. He uses broad, layered marks with thick paint to represent the sea and sky, with little distinction between the two, capturing fleeting moments of the water and surf. How would you describe his work?
