what is a “district of innovation”? Bill 1842 allows traditional school districts to access most of the flexibilities available to open enrollment charter schools.

requirements to become a district of innovation… most recent report of academic performance must reflect “met standard” follow the steps to adopt an innovation plan.

what is the process? Initiate the process (board resolution) Hold a public hearing to consider development of an innovation plan Appoint a committee Develop a plan Post the plan (30 days) Approve the plan Inform the Commissioner

what options would it open up? some considerations include…. School start date Length of the student day Class size ratios Use of teachers’ planning periods Teacher benefit packages
