High School Diploma Requirements In grade 10, students are awarded credits for each course that they are enrolled in. All core courses (English, Math, Science, & Social) and some option courses (Band, Choral, Second Languages) are worth 5 credits. All other courses are worth 3 credits (or more) which is based on a guideline of 25 hours/credit of class time and workload. A minimum of 50% must be earned to obtain credits or the course must be taken again. All students must complete a minimum of 100 credits for a High School diploma.

High School Diploma Requirements (continued) All high school students must complete the following to obtain a high school diploma: English 30-1 or 30-2 Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2 Math 20 -1, or 20-2, or 20-3 Physics 20 or Chemistry 20 or Biology 20 or Science 20, or Science 24 Physical Education 10 Career and Life Management (CALM) 10 credits from Career and Technology Studies, or Fine Arts or PE 20/30 10 more credits at a 30 level other than English or Social (ex. Work Experience, PE 30, Drama 30, Band 30, Religion 35)

High School Certificate of Achievement Students need to get a minimum of 80 credits including the following courses: English 20-2 or 30-4 Math 10-3 or 20-4 Science 14 or 20-4 Social Studies 10-2 or 20-4 Physical Education 10 Career and Life Management (CALM) 5 credits in a 30-level K & E Occupational course or CTS or a locally developed course with an occupational focus 5 credits in a 30-level K & E Workplace Practicum or Work Experience or Green Certificate OR 30-level RAP course (instead of the previous two requirements) Students with a certificate of achievement are unable to attend a post-secondary institution without upgrading.

High School Diploma Requirements (continued) ALL STUDENTS must complete a minimum of 3 credits in Religion 15, Religion 25, and Religion 35 for each year in attendance at GRCCS.

GRCCS Recommendations All students should try to graduate with a Math at a 30 level and a minimum of two Science courses at the 30 level. We recommend that you take Science 30 and Biology 30 especially if you are taking Math 30 -2. Otherwise, we recommend you take any combination (2-3 courses) of Science 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30.

Post-Secondary Requirements NAIT---Industrial Heavy Equipment Technology (2 year Diploma program) Entrance Requirements include completion of grade 11 with English 30, Math 30-2, Physics 30, and Chemistry 20. Students must also complete a Career Investigation that indicates what they have done in high school to show an interest in this field. This program is competitive which means entrance requirements may include academic achievement based on the number of students who have applied to this program. Last year……60% overall average in Grade 12 English / Pure Math 30 or Math 30-1 /Physics 30 and Chemistry 30 – they are currently admitting applicants with academic averages of 76% or better.

Post-Secondary Requirements NAIT---Chemical Engineering Technology (2 year Diploma program) Students must have a high school diploma and have completed English 30-1 or 30-2, Math 30-1 or 75% in Math 30-2, and one of Science 30, Physics 30, or Chemistry 30. Students must also complete a Career Investigation that indicates what they have done in high school to show an interest in this field. They accept a 70% overall average - they are currently admitting applicants with academic averages of 72% or better. Post-Secondary Requirements University of Alberta---Faculty of Arts Students must have completed their high school diploma with English 30-1, and four other courses from different categories (Social Studies 30-1, Math 30P, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, Science 30, Art 30, Drama 30, etc.). Students are encouraged to use a wide variety of high school courses to maximize their future programs in the university. They are currently accepting averages of 74% or higher. Specific courses are needed for different majors and minors. For example, a student getting a major or minor in Psychology or transferring to the Faculty of Education (Elementary) need Math 30-1 or 30-2 and a grade 12 Science as some of their four required courses.

Scholarship Information Rutherford Scholarship All students who achieve a combined average of 80% or higher in 5 specific courses can receive up to $2500 by the time they graduate. All students who achieve a combined average between 75.0% and 79.9% in 5 specific courses can receive up to $1500 by the time they graduate.

Rutherford Scholarship (Continued) In grade 10, students can receive $300 or $400; in grade 11, students can receive $500 or $ 800; in grade 12, students can receive $700 or $1300. In grade 10, students must use English 10-1 or 10-2; any two of Math 10-1 or 10-2, Science 10, Social 10-1 or 10-2, or a language; and any two 1000 level CTS courses worth 3 credits. The same applies for grade 11. In grade 12, students must use English 30-1 or 30-2, any two of the Math, Science, or Social courses, or a language; and any two 3000 level CTS courses worth 5 credits.

Work Experience & Registered Apprentice Programs Any students who are 15 years or older can take a Work Experience. All students must take HCS3000 prior to beginning their Work Experience (offered in Job Safety 10). Students can earn 3 – 10 credits at each level of Work Experience based on 25 hours per credit. A minimum 75 hours must be achieved before credits are given. GRCCS students must complete a Work Experience program prior to starting RAP. All RAP students must complete the Job Safety course and Emergency First Aid. Most students in grade 10 do not have the time in their schedule to complete a Work Experience or RAP.

Extra-Curricular Activities: Sports: Cheerleading, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Track and Field, Cross Country Running, and Badminton, Student Council School Spirit Activities: Wake-a-thon, Dances, etc.

Parent Responsibilities Get to know your child’s teachers. Check your child’s homework regularly as they can expect homework daily. Get your ConnectEd login from the office and check regularly. Provide the office with your active email account to receive regular updates. Check announcements online for daily activities. Join the parent association. Attend open houses and back-to-school nights. Read the school newsletters. Participate in after-school events. Support your child in school activities.

Scheduling Updates for 2015-2016 Students may have the opportunity to pick their courses in June. However, teachers will be discussing individual students to place them into the course that best fits their abilities and work ethic. Students will need to finalize their schedules in August BEFORE school starts. There will be specific dates set for students in grade 10, 11, and 12. If you choose not to finalize your schedule, you will be given whatever is available. Changing a course only occurs in the first two weeks of the semester.
