Generic and Entrepreneurial Skills in the Curriculum Lena Andersson-Eklund, Pro Vice-Chancellor, SLU October 21, 2013

The mission of SLU SLU develops the understanding and sustainable management and use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, education and environmental monitoring in cooperation with the surrounding society

Cooperation and innovation From research to practice. Communication with the surrounding community is part of SLU’s operational concept.

From theory to practice – for students transfer subject based learning outcomes to more general situations and contexts support the students own initiatives in formulating questions for in depth studies and topics for project work include contacts with society and industry in curricula integrate the generic skills into curricula and examination plan for a progression in the study programs

Examples of skills – activities & examination Communication Skills (oral) Activity: Speak – monologue, dialogue, in groups, argue, describe, interview, negotiate, present, demonstrate Examination: Discussion, debate, role play, opposition, video presentation, simulations Critical Assessment Activity: Develop arguments, reflect, assess, choose, compare Examination: Take part in debate, write reflection, write article, write review, argue for thesis Teamwork Skills Activity: Work in groups: projects, presentations Examination: Self and peer assessment of teamwork skills during and after group work

Student - TTO collaboration, two examples 1) Student Desktop Researchers Students perform initial market surveys, competitor analysis, investigate new trends etc. Guidance by Senior Business Advisors 2) Student consulting company Provides services based on the competences of SLU:s students to the private sector Students in landscape architecture, veterinary medicine, agriculture, business etc. Selection of students and appointment to projects based on competence and time available Customers are companies in the green sector, private house owners and housing cooperatives

Innovative student - TTO collaboration creates win-win situations in technology transfer Students gain deepened knowledge and skills related to their area of study hands on training in project management a professional network insights into the challenges of selling and delivering services insight on relevant market players and dynamics and future entrepreneurial and employment opportunities an hourly wage SLU gains an additional channel for spreading academic knowledge to a broader public marketing of SLU study programs ambassadors of innovation and entrepreneurship efficient resources allocation
