The Marine Biome Marine Food Chains. Biodiversity The variety of living things in a particular area.
HOW DOES ENERGY FLOW THROUGH AN ECOSYSTEM?  An ecosystem consists of all the organisms living and in an area as well as the nonliving parts of that environment.

Energy Flow: Autotrophs
Food Chains, Webs & Pyramids! 1) The Passage of Energy The Sun The source of energy for all life on the planet Producers (Autotroph) Use the sun’s energy.
Food Chains show how energy moves through the ecosystem in a linear fashion.
18.2. All living things need energy to survive Everything we do requires energy Organisms are divided into three groups based on how they get their energy.
Interdepedence We rely on and interact with our environment and everything in it.

Food Chains, Webs, and Pyramids. Ecosystems are divided into different sections called trophic levels Each trophic level represents a transfer of energy.

Energy in Ecosystems

Bell ringer Put all your stuff away along the side of the classroom. Take out your notebook

WHAT DOES MOOFASA MEAN WHEN HE SAYS WE ARE ALL PART OF THE CIRCLE OF LIFE? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW7PlTaawfQ

THE WEB OF LIFE

ECOSYSTEM EXAMPLES What is an ecosystem? Ecosystem: community of living and non-living organisms interacting with one another

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS

What is the ultimate source of all energy?

ENERGY IN ECOSYSTEMS Energy is recycled in an ecosystem because it cannot be created nor destroyed.

FOOD CHAIN Food Chain: Single pathway of energy that shows interaction between organisms Food Web: Multiple pathways of energy of ENTIRE ecosystem Arrow points in direction of energy transfer and predator

FOOD CHAIN VS. FOOD WEB

ORGANISMS WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM Producers/ Autotrophs Has the most energy Makes their own food Have the most energy in a food web because they get it directly from the sun!

Consumers/Heterotroph: get energy from eating other organisms (primary, secondary, tertiary, quarternary) Apex Predator: top of the food chain But wait, Moofasa mentioned that an ecosystem is a circle of life. What comes after the final consumer passes away?

THE END IS ONLY THE BEGINNING Decomposers: Get energy from breaking down decaying organisms. All organisms in the food chain are decomposed by decomposers.

TYPES OF CONSUMERS Vore= to eat Herbivore – only eat plants Carnivores – only eat meat Omnivores – eat BOTH plants and meat Detritovore- breaks down decaying organisms

Name the Consumer and Type of Consumer! Which organism is the Producer? Primary Consumer? Secondary Consumer? Tertiary Consumer?

ENERGY PYRAMID Trophic level is each level in a food chain. Less energy as you rise to the top 1 J 10 J 100 J

Student, Which organism has the most energy? Student, What is the relationship between the goat and the jackal? Student, What would happen to the mouse population if the owl, rabbit and snake population increased? Student, What would happen to the snake population if the Kites decreased?

What do you think has more energy, a plant or a wolf? Explain. Notebook Output What do you think has more energy, a plant or a wolf? Explain.

CREATE YOUR OWN FOOD WEB! When Mr. Legion says go: I will have ten minutes to create a food web based off scenarios at my ASSIGNED lab table with my lab group I will have markers/ poster paper at my lab table I will bring my notes and pen/pencil I will speak in professional voices I will work with MY particular lab group only
