Republican Reconstruction in South Carolina Standard: 8-5.3: Summarize the successes and failures of Reconstruction in SC, including the creation of political, educational, and social opportunities for African Americans; the rise of discriminatory groups; and the withdrawal of federal protection. Essential Question: How did Republican Reconstruction look in SC?

SC Constitution of 1868 Most democratic constitution in SC so far Was written by 70 black and 54 white delegates. Provided universal manhood suffrage (all males- black and white- can vote) SC sent six African Americans to the US House.

Educational Opportunities for African Americans Many openly flocked to freedom schools established through the Freedmen’s Bureau. Northern Philanthropists provided support for establishment of colleges for Af. Americans in SC Claflin College Benedict College Allen University The Avery Institute

Legacies of Republican Reconstruction Despite some corruption by individuals, social service programs (health care) were established. Public Schools for white and African-Americans These services raised taxes that whites claimed were bankrupting them.
