Welcome to EPD381 Subject Studies Vicki Stokes School of Education 18/09/17

WHAT IS SUBJECT STUDIES? SUBJECT STUDIES is a module which is taught within several education programmes. CONTENT SYNOPSIS: This module will investigate the content of subject areas taught within the curriculum, including: Consideration given to the development of a variety of approaches to teach a particular subject or topic area; Formulating skillful questioning which reveals levels of pupil/student understanding; Ways of motivating pupils/students including the provision of a challenging curriculum designed to foster pupils’/students’ problem solving abilities; Setting homework or home-based activities that are challenging, consolidate work already completed and encourages pupils/students to take responsibility for their own academic progress

WHAT WILL THAT LOOK LIKE FOR PGCE PRIMARY? Covers subject knowledge development and pedagogical approaches within the National Curriculum Core Subjects of: English Maths Science

The timetable looks like this…… Next Monday you have the following sessions: 9.00 – 10.00 10.00 – 11.00 11.00-12.00 12.00-1.00 1.00-2.00   MATHS RV416 UPPER PRIMARY DG313 ENGLISH Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre (Prospect) EARLY PRIMARY DG313A

Module & Learning Guides The Module Guide is generic to all programmes accessing this module and contains an outline of the module. The Learning Guide is specific to your programme (PGCE Primary) and contains more specific information about the content and timing of sessions, as well as assessment guidance. Both will be available on Canvas when sessions begin next week. You will find them in the module space for EDP381. You will also find access to your reading list through ‘My Module Resources’. Some reading is listed within the Learning Guide.

ASSESSMENT OF THE MODULE Both elements 1 and 2 are required to achieve a pass.  Action plan and completed Subject knowledge e-portfolio (1,000 equivalent - Guidance). A pass grade will be awarded on the successful completion of an action plan. Pass/fail Write an evaluative and critically reflective commentary of your curriculum, relating to your specific phase or subject/s (3,000 - guidance). Graded

AUDITS Subject knowledge audits will be completed over the next two weeks. This will enable you to complete and submit the action plan required for Assessment One. English audit: 29/09/17 14.00 – 15.00 Science audit: 29/09/17 13.00 – 14.00 Maths audit: 06/10/17 11.00 – 12.00

Developing Your Subject Knowledge The purpose of the audits is to give a clear picture of your current understanding. The results of the audit will be used in a formative way to enable you to set targets for your own subject knowledge development. Weaker areas in your own subject knowledge should be developed through reading and Teaching Practice, as well as through taught sessions.

ACTION PLAN Will show you have engaged with the results of the audits and have set yourself personal targets which will enable your subject knowledge in each area to be developed further. Will tell us how you might meet these targets. Will you seek advice, observe practice in school, undertake specific reading, etc Will show that you have considered the evidence you might present in your e-portfolio. This will be submitted through Turnitin. Date to follow – this will be shortly after audits are completed.

ASSESSMENT TWO Assessment two is due: 23rd February 2018 and will be submitted through Canvas and Turnitin. Further guidance on this assignment will be given later in the module. We want you to concentrate on your subject knowledge development at this stage in the programme.
