Presentation transcript:

One Planet OPC is about creating better places to live evidence for example from BedZED that over 2/3rds of people report that they have a higher quality of life compared to where they lived previously Not about doing without or a ‘hairshirt’ existence – it is about how we will live in the 21st century making the most of green technologies and the latest thinking in community development and placemaking One Planet

Vision for One Planet Living Creating places, products, services which make it is easy, attractive and affordable for people to lead happy and healthy lives within the environmental limits of the planet. OPC is about creating better places to live evidence for example from BedZED that over 2/3rds of people report that they have a higher quality of life compared to where they lived previously Not about doing without or a ‘hairshirt’ existence – it is about how we will live in the 21st century making the most of green technologies and the latest thinking in community development and placemaking

New office becomes eco-village We needed a new office and wanted an eco-office. This led to BedZED eco-village in south London, a project which BioRegional initiated and were co-developers with Peabody. Architects Bill Dunster and Arup emgineers. BioRegional’s London office is here and many of the team live here.

Green lifestyles Car sharing, local food, electric vehicles

Neighbourliness: Average BedZED resident knows 19 neighbours by name

Looking at the big picture: metrics of our planet We know from satellite imaging that there are 12.6 billion hectares of productive land and sea there is on the planet We know how much can be produced renewably from this area and how much carbon dioxide the planet can asborb from burning fossil fuels if we leave 10% of productive land and sea for wildlife, we have a budget of 11.2 billion hectares from which to meet our needs. For each country we can work out how much productive land and sea it takes to support that country’s level of consumption – the country’s ecological footprint Adding the ecological footprints together of all countries we see that we exceed the carrying capacity of the planet in the mid 1980s and we are currently exceeding the planet’s ability to regenerate naturally-renewing resources by 50% per year We are maintaining this level of consumption by eating into the natural reserves of the planet – eg 70% of global fisheries are fully or over-exploited, we are losing forests at a rate of 70 million hectares per year and we are releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere faster than the planet can absorb it Humanity is no longer living off nature’s interest, but drawing down its capital. - Approximately 50% of the ecological footprint is carbon – or you can say that our carbon footprint is half our problem”

If everyone on earth lived like the average European we would need 3 planets to support us.

10 One Planet Principles

In practice - One Brighton At BioRegional, Quintain and Crest’s One Brighton apartment development near Brighton city centre, we found that setting very high sustainability standards can generate faster sales, higher prices and higher rental income compared to similar housing nearby. Sold 50% faster than benchmarks Now commands about a 10% premium on sales and rental values over surrounding apartments Measured post-occupancy carbon saving of 70% over existing housing stock average It was built Within the normal range of build cost two residents lost 25kg between them in a year In 2013 Brighton and Hove commmitted to become a One Planet City

One Planet Construction – culture change

Other outcomes Probabilities play out “My husband and I moved into One Brighton, sold our cars and adopted a healthier lifestyle. In 18 months we lost 35kg between us.’

Elmsbrook, Bicester, A2 Dominion Town centre location School will use some of the facilities

Grow Community - Seattle Town centre location School will use some of the facilities

Grow Community We were stunned by the market response. With minimal advertising we have presold 80% of the for sale units and have a waiting list for the rental units.’ Marja Preston, Former President Asani Town centre location School will use some of the facilities

Some things to look out for Sustainable Development Goals One planet digital platform Social and environmental capital accounting

Creating quality of life Aim though to ‘create places where it is easy, attractive and affordable for people to lead happy and healthy lives within a fair share of the earth’s resources’ Tom and Janette (pronounced ‘Yanetta’) moved into a 1 bed flat within BedZED and as their family grew, waited until 3-bed became available and bought this rather than move out of BedZED Number of others have done the same No point creating sustainable places unless people are happy
