Magdalena Kowalska, CERN PH-SME-IS ISOLDE scientific coordinator’s report ISCC meeting, July 6, 2011 Beam requests and schedule 2011 Experimental statistics Status of experiments and ISOLDE hall Safety Long shutdown Magdalena Kowalska, CERN PH-SME-IS

New and active experiments at ISOLDE INTC February 2011 12 new experiments: IS511 – IS522 245 approved RIB shifts (out of 403 requested) 6 experiments completed (2 REX experiments): IS425, IS435, IS439, IS449, IS470, IS480 81 active experiments for 2011 beam period (+10 LOIs) (55 data-taking and 26 in preparation); compared to 63 in 2010;

Injector schedule 2011 (v3.1) ISOLDE dates: protons from PSB April 27 physics start ISOLDE May 2 protons stop November 21 (i.e. ~29 weeks for physics like in 2010) Several long periods of MD partly with parasitic beam to ISOLDE (not guaranteed) Regular technical stops with no protons - 5.5 days in total (only stop 1 changed and influenced ISOLDE)

Beam requests and schedule 2011 Beam requests (from approved experiments): 657.5 RIB shifts requested by 59 INTC experiments (22 with no request) Compared to 627 in 2009 and 2010 Requested RILIS shifts: 376 57 % (359 in 2009 and 350 in 2010) Requested REX-ISOLDE RIB shifts: 323.5 (273 in 2009 and 333 in 2010) Additional 60.5 shifts for TISD, LOIs + on-line MD … Scheduled runs: 491.5 RIB shifts in total (469 in 2010) 440 RIB shifts for 48 experiments (432 in 2010) 33 experiments not scheduled (11 of those requested beam) 233 online RILIS shifts (ca. 2100h of online + offline operation) 12 REX-ISOLDE runs for 14 experiments with 190.5 RIB shifts (43 %) (160 in 2010)

Beam requests and schedule 2011

ISOLDE running period 2011 29 weeks for physics ISOLDE program 2011 (v2.2): physics started May 2 protons stop Nov. 21 29 weeks for physics 48 IS experiments 5 TISD runs 8 LOIs >490 RIB shifts Scheduled: GPS HRS

GPS robot problem In the middle of wk24 GPS robot developed a problem: no GPS physics for up to 6 weeks: GPS runs in wk24-25 moved to HRS (WITCH and SSP); HRS run in wk26 cut by 1 day in setup and 2 days in physics ; SSP run and tilted-foil LOI in wk27 cancelled; Schedule before: Spare part arrives after 2 weeks: SSP run in wk27 reestablished; Only titled-foil LOI has to be cancelled (colliding with REX setup on HRS) Schedule after: GPS HRS Thanks to the ISOLDE technical teams for setting up beams in a reduced time and even on the weekend and late evenings!

REX runs 2011 Scheduled: 14 IS experiments 1 online MD run 1 LOI 190 RIB shifts

Targets 2011 27 target units planned TISD 12 for HRS 15 for GPS Some old or to-be-reused units 11 new UC units (+ 1 ThC) TISD 5-6 dedicated runs: Sm RILIS Mg LIST Dy RILIS (Pr RILIS) HfO-CP To be defined at SGUI meeting

RILIS runs 2011 17 RILIS runs planned (combined in 14 runs) several target tests Ti:Sa lasers used for some runs New beams: At, Sm, Dy, (Pr) 14 elements >240 RIB shifts planned Ca. 2100h operation

First online runs Successful TISD runs: Mg beam + LIST, RILIS rare earths: Sm, Dy, (Pr), At RILIS Successful physics: - Online emission channeling on 27Mg (after previous failed trials) - n-def Ga at COLLAPS – in spite of serious problems with ISCOOL and merging switchyard - Beta-delayed fission on n-def Fr isotopes – in spite of sparking in ISCOOL - Most solid-state and biophysics runs with YO-HP, Ta-W, and Sn targets - n-deficient Pb isotopes: first run on MINIBALL in 2011 - Coulex on 140Nd – first physics use of low work-function cavity + RILIS Partly successful physics: 35Ar for WITCH – in spite of GPS unavailability, ISCOOL repair, and broken target (proton scan and yield checks exceptionally on Saturday) Unsuccessful physics: Due to too strong contamination: 48Cr, 75Se, 77Br for SSP with YO-HP; Due to not enough beam: n-rich At and Dy for ISOLTRAP; 140Pr for COLLAPS (other masses and magnetic moments measured instead)

Experimental statistics Calendar years between proposal acceptance and first counted shifts (for active proposals and those closed in 2010 and 2011) (note: first attempts often result in 0 shifts counted, real waiting time is lower than that presented) 3 years 2 years Same year 1 year Average < 1 year

Status of experiments CRIS beamline fully operational; alpha decay station being tested at ISOLDE

Status of experiments Beta-NMR tilted-foils setup ready and taking REX stable beam this week

Status of experiments ISOTRAP recovered quickly from a magnet quench (in February, exactly 1 year from the previous one) WITCH intermediate field allows REX mass scaling (but due to other problems new REX settings for many masses are not yet available) WITCH got first preliminary physics results: in spite of opening up the setup 2 times just before the run MINIBALL T-REX chamber used successfully for Coulex experiments GLM will soon see a new diffusion chamber (tested in b. 275 and to be tested at LA1) Digital perturbed angular correlation setup in b. 115 delivering high-quality data ASPIC will be revived: student from Korea assisted by A. Gottberg (Thierry’s fellow)

News from ISOLDE More free space in ISOLDE extension, SAS area, and b. 275 thanks to clean-up actions during shutdown Rearrangement of the control room New rules for kitchen use -> more tidy Jungle behind ISOLDE cut Pre- and turbo-pumps for common use available: contact J. Thiboud Improved supply of electronics modules (key with MK) Simple digital DAQ system in demand (MINIBALL tests, CRIS, ISOLTRAP) ISOLDE offices fully occupied during summer (students, visitors)

Safety Safety files for fixed experiments evaluated by safety responsibles: reports and steps to follow with local responsibles -> to be addressed until next running period Improved traceability of implanted samples: Karl’s database includes storage location and is available to RP personnel Extension of b. 115 and move of SSP lab from b.275 under way: funding guaranteed, planned for this shutdown ISOLDE will have a dedicated “RP expert” who will take care of sources, etc: J. Thiboud will follow a 2-week RP course in Lausanne (cost covered by RP) Key cabinet with access only for those with valid ISOLDE access will be installed next Monday in ISOLDE control room: place for common ISOLDE keys; traceability of who/and when took which key Problems with some RP shipments and source requests due to personnel issues at RP: informed the RP Group Leader, Doris Forkel-Wirth

Safety Rearrangement of b. 115: all samples and sources stored in a well separated area; chemistry and measurement area also separated

Long shutdown Most probable scenario: physics for everybody until December 2012 Injectors restart in April/May 2014 No Linac4 connection To be decided at the beginning of 2012

Thank you
