Assignment 1: Hanging Scrolls

A hanging scroll is one of the many traditional ways to display and exhibit East Asian painting and calligraphy.

They often showed nature.

And sometimes included messages or thoughts that went with the images.

For our first assignment we are going to create our own hanging scroll.

So, you will need to decide what visual images you want and find a reference photo.

You will also want to decide if you will include words.

First come up with some ideas and sketch them out

Practice painting with the Sumi ink.

Lightly draw your design on paper then paint with ink and watercolors Lightly draw your design on paper then paint with ink and watercolors. Be sure to include washes along with your lines.

Then we will make some awesome hanging scrolls!
