Orpheus Very little was told of him before Eurydice His mother was one of the Muses Mother gave him the “gift of music” Raised in Thrace Thracians were “most musical of the peoples of Greece” Orpheus “Had no rival there or anywhere except for the Gods alone.” “There was no limit to his power… No one and nothing could resist him.”

Orpheus Orpheus skill surpassed anything ever thought possible “Everything animate and inanimate followed him” Sailed with Jason on the ship Argo When the heroes were weary he would play his lyre and suddenly they would be “Aroused to fresh zeal” “The fiercest spirits would grow calm and forget their anger” The ship Argo’s men were spell bound by the Sirens when they sailed past their island Orpheus played his lyer and broke the Sirens’ spell His skills even out preformed the sound of the Sirens!!

Eurydice Wife to Orpheus She was MADLY in love with Orpheus After their wedding day according to the book she was walking in the meadow with her bride’s maids after the wedding When a viper struck her and killed her

Orpheus and Eurydice His love for Eurydice was so great that he dared to go to Hades to bring her back All he took was his Lyre and his skills With that he went to Hades Charmed the three headed guard dog Cerberus Made the Furies weep “Drew iron tears down Pluto’s cheek”

Hades Hades was brought to tears along with all others in the underworld Hades feeling compassion for the lovers decided to give them a chance Orpheus was to walk out of Hades with Eurydice behind him But... Orpheus could not turn around to see if Eurydice was behind him If he did she would be dragged back

Orpheus and Eurydice The two lovers began their journey out of Hades. As they walked Orpheus grew anxious to see Eurydice As they saw the light of day Orpheus acted to soon As Orpheus stepped out of the underworld he turned to see Eurydice still in the caverns She was then swiftly dragged back down to Hades only saying one word “Farewell”

Orpheus Orpheus tried to go after here, gods would not allow it Went back to Thrice and lived his days in the woods A band of Maenads found him Was ripped limb from limb Head thrown into the river Herbes The Muses found his head and buried it in a sanctuary on their island Rest of body put in a tomb at the bottom of Mount Olympus “The nightingales sing more sweetly than anywhere else.”

“Orpheus’s Tomb”
