Strategies for Advanced Energy Storage Sue Gander, Division Director Energy, Environment and Transportation NGA Solutions…brought to you by the NGA Center for Best Practices 42nd Conference of the New England Governors/Eastern Canadian Premiers August 13, 2018, Stowe, Vermont

NGA Resources on Storage www.nga.org

Battery Storage Landscape Gaining ground Capacity up from 442 MW in 2012 to 1,554 MW in 2017. Growing market Up to 2 GW installed by 2020 —a $2 billion market. Falling costs Lithium-based energy storage costs expected to decline 38 percent 2016 to 2020. Providing jobs Electricity storage supported more than 91,000 jobs in the US in 2017 (53,000 jobs affiliated with battery storage).

States Taking Action and Adding Capacity 33 states taken 1+ action on advanced energy storage (end of 2017) CA accounts for 41 % of energy storage projects, 21 % of installed capacity. AZ, NV and TX each have more than 10% of U.S. capacity.

1 2 3 Strategies for Governors and Premiers 4 5 6 7 These can be combined and pursued in any order. 1 2 3 Support R&D efforts Set procurement target Provide financial incentives 4 Incorporate energy storage in state energy planning Recognize multiple benefits of storage in state regulations Streamline siting, approval, interconnection processes Encourage assessment of storage in energy assurance efforts 5 6 7
