The Czech Republic is situated in Central Europe and boarders on Germany, Poland, Slovak Republic and Austria. It is geographically divided into three parts – Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia with the capital Prague. Nowadays our country has 10.2 million inhabitants. The Town of Vítkov

The town of Vítkov, with its about inhabitants, is the centre of Vítkov area. It is situated some 25 kilometres from Opava in the Vítkov Highlands. The average altitude is 480 metres and the highest point is called Horka (603 m). The town was founded together with the Vikštejn castle by Vítek from Kravaře, probably in the second half of the 13 th century. In the past the inhabitants of Vítkov practised mainly farming craftwork and trade, textile was dominating. After political and economical changes at the end of the last century, the industry in our mini- region has been limited very much and the unemployment reaches as far as 20%. The surrrounding countryside is characterized by two deep valleys of the rivers Moravice and Odra. We can see here some rare and protected plants and animal species. A considerable part of this territory is heavily forested. Brief history of the school Our school was founded in 1953 as Music School Vítkov and only music was taught at that time. Gradually it was completed by teaching dance and fine arts and even drama for a short time. There were also changes in the title of the school – Folk School of Art as far as to todays name Basic School of Art. This year (2008) it has been celebrating the 55 th aniversary of its foundation. Our school was founded in 1953 as Music School Vítkov and only music was taught at that time. Gradually it was completed by teaching dance and fine arts and even drama for a short time. There were also changes in the title of the school – Folk School of Art as far as to todays name Basic School of Art. This year (2008) it has been celebrating the 55 th aniversary of its foundation.

During those years hundreds of pupils passed successfully their studies and some of them continued on art high schools and universities. The pupils are basically pupils and students of primary and secondary schools and they attend our school in the afternoons. Especially Brass orchestra reaches excellent results abroad. Lets name at least golden medal from Hungary, silver appreciation from Poland or silver possition from marching show in Italy. The latest common project of the whole school has been the musical Long Live the Ghosts where substantial part of our students were participating.
