A Model for Change…

CHANGE

CHANGE… THINK “BOLD AND AUDACIOUS” !!! Typical school change model Decisions made by administration Only “Elite” staff involved Incremental effort over time Momentum and teacher involvement is low Initiative fades over time due to new initiatives Low level Qs communication Result: Minimal sustained changes in culture and practices. Minimal trust. Critical Mass Model Decisions made/shared by many staff Higher % staff engagement Accelerated effort/less time Increased momentum and teacher participation/support Initiative becomes sustained and the basis for new ideas Better communication level Qs Result: Shift in culture and improved instructional practices. Increased trust.

How do we do this?

Newton's first law states … Newton's first law states …. that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. (We need some force!?!)

Newton’s First Law… F = M X A FORCE = MASS TIMES ACCELERATION (Force is a product of the combination of M and A)

In order to change, we will need some “Special” kind of mass… our regular brand has not been able to foster sufficient change.

CRITICAL MASS Webster’s Dictionary… crit·i·cal mass noun 1 CRITICAL MASS Webster’s Dictionary… crit·i·cal mass noun 1. PHYSICS The minimum amount of fissile material needed to maintain a nuclear chain reaction. (U238, not U235) 2. The minimum size or amount of something required to start or maintain a venture. "a communication system is of no value unless there is a critical mass of users" Critical Mass = “M+”

M+… “THINK ABOUT THE HUMAN QUALITIES & SKILLS AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE YOU WILL NEED TO GET THE CHANGES YOU WANT…” THINK FISSILE !!! (Law of Diffusion of Innovation= how many people)

ACCELERATION Webster’s Dictionary … akˌseləˈrāSH(ə)n/ noun: a vehicle's capacity to gain speed within a short time. "a Formula One car is superior to an Indy car in its acceleration" increase in the rate or speed of something. "the acceleration of the industrialization process“ PHYSICS the rate of change of velocity per unit of time. Think of a rocket launch…. 0 - 18,000 mph in 8+ minutes !

ACCELERATION = YOUR MIND SET A collective MIND SET will increase the magnitude of your group’s ACCELERATION as well as focus on the direction that you want to go!!!

FORCE? FORCE = COLLABORATION! (GUNG HO!)

F = M+ X A Collaboration = Critical Mass X Mind Set RESULT: CHAIN REACTION with a sustained shift in school Culture

CHAIN REACTION…

Thank you!
