MAPPING AND VISUALIZING “DOLOMITE CHIMNEYS” J. R. WOOD MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

ORDOVICIAN PRODUCTION IN MICHIGAN CHARACTERIZED BY ELONGATE, LINEAR FIELDS TRENDING NW-SE PRIMARY PRODUCTION FROM TRENTON-BLACK RIVER FMS. FRACTURING AND SUBSEQUENT SECONDARY DOLOMITIZATION HAVE DEVELOPED IRREGULAR POROSITY ZONES MOST FRACTURE ZONES OCCUR ON FLANKS OF MAJOR STRUCTURES TRENDING NORTH OR NORTHWEST AVERAGE PAY APPROX. 60 FT. FIELDS USUALLY HAVE GAS CAP & SOLUTION GAS DRIVE SOURCE: OIL & GAS FIELDS SYMPOSIUM, MICHIGAN BASIN GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY

POSSIBLE MODEL FOR MICHIGAN “CHIMNEYS”

POSSIBLE MODEL FOR MICHIGAN KARSTIFICATION

CONCLUSIONS KARSTIFICATION & DOLOMITIZATION ARE PRIMARY PROCESSES IN MICHIGAN RESERVOIRS RESERVOIR-SCALE FRACTURES CAN BE RELIABLY MAPPED USING CONVENTIONAL DRILLER’S REPORTS GIS SOFTWARE (e.g. ArcView) FACILITATES RE-MAPPING
