FEES All Athletes must pay $50 per sport to participate. $150 cap per student high school $250 family cap middle/high school combined

FORMS Physical Form - All students must have a valid physical form on file before he/she can practice. Physicals before April 1st are good only for one year. Physicals after April 1st are good for two years. Alternate Year Form - needs to be signed the 2nd year rather than a physical form. Parent and student must sign this form.

FORMS WIAA Information Bulletin - Covers the basic rules regarding the WIAA. This form must be signed by parent and athlete before athletes can practice. Emergency Information Card - This is a card the coaches keep for all athletes on their teams. It is used if an athlete gets hurt to contact parents or given to first responders.

FORMS Co-Curricular Code - This form must be signed by both a parent and athlete before a student is allowed to practice. Concussion Form - Required by the state legislature. Must be signed once each year. This is separate from all other forms.

Forms All the signatures required by the school have been placed on one signature form. Forms are on the district website, East website and can be picked up in the main office.

Appleton Area SCHOOL DISTRICT CO-CURRICULAR CODE

Co- Curricular Code The AASD sponsors co-curricular activities. Although the co-curricular program is a valuable part of the total education experience, participation in co-curriculars is a privilege, and not a right. As such all participants must abide by the code in order to continue participation in these activities.

Attendance Rules All students must be in school ALL DAY of scheduled events and/or practices to participate. Students may not participate in any co-curricular activity during/after school on the same day as an unexcused absence. Exceptions to the attendance rule include the following: a. Absences which have been excused for a funeral, court appearance, college visit, doctor appointments, etc..

Academic Rules 1. A student must be a full time student. 2. A student must pass all classes each quarter in order to remain eligible to participate. 3. Incomplete grades shall count the same as F’s until completed. Grades will be checked each mid quarter (4 ½ weeks). Students receiving an F in any class will be placed on Academic Re-Engagement Status. The coach/advisor will let the parents know their son/daughter is being placed on this status. Students who receive an F at mid quarter will have ten days to get their grade up to passing. He/she may still practice and compete during these ten days. Students not passing after the ten days will be considered ineligible for games/contests/performances for the remainder of the quarter. Students will not be allowed to practice during this time.

Examples of Prohibited Conduct A student is covered by the code from the time he/she begins involvement with the co-curricular program until the conclusion of his/her high school co – curricular activity career. This includes the summer months. A participant must refrain from any conduct at any time that would reflect unfavorable on him/herself or the school. Examples of Prohibited Conduct Use, possession, buying, selling of controlled substances Use, possession, buying, or selling of alcoholic beverages Possession or use of drug paraphernalia Use or possession of electronic cigarettes. It doesn’t matter if there is nicotene in the electronic cigarette. Remaining present at events/parties where alcohol or other illegal substances are being illegally consumed. You must leave right away. Use or possession of tobacco Profanity or obscene gestures Unsportsmanlike Conduct A criminal offense or violation of an ordinance having a statuatory counterpart Acts of vandalism Illegal or inappropriate use of the Internet, or personal cell phones on or off school campus

Type 1 Violations Violating school rules (per Student Handbook) and/or displaying conduct not consistent with representing a WIAA member school or the AASD may result in a co-curricular code violation. The following is a list of possible Type 1 violations. a. Bullying /Harassment 1st time as defined by student handbook. b. Causing a disturbance during the school day. d. Blatant disrespect of person or property. e. Repeated inappropriate behavior (1st time) f Academic Dishonesty

Type 1 Consequences Students will be suspended for no less than one contest and up to 20% of the activity. Student may do 5 community service hours to reduce the penalty. Student can practice with his/her team, but can’t compete until the suspension is completed

Type 2 Violations Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug related athletic code violations. Use, buying , possession or selling alcoholic beverages. Use or possession of tobacco or nicotine products in any form. Use, possession, selling of controlled substances, street drugs and performing enhancing substances. Remaining present at events/parties where alcohol or other illegal controlled substances are present. Students are required to leave any gathering immediately upon their knowledge of illegal substances. Deliberately transporting other students to any illegal gatherings where it is known that alcohol, tobacco, or drug related usage will take place. Violations that lead to out of school suspension. Fighting that leads to our of school suspension.

Type 2 Consequences 1st Type 2 Violation - 50% or 25% and 10 community service hours. 2nd Type 2 Violation – 75% or 50% and 20 community service hours. 3rd Type 2 Violation - Out for one calendar year plus 40 community service hours.

Violations Triggered by Alcohol or Drug Use A student who has been suspended from co – curriculars due to drug or alcohol use must voluntarily take part in an alcohol/other drug assessment and follow all recommendations from the AODA assessment. The student must also provide a clean drug/alcohol screen prior to resuming practices or competition. The drug screening will be conducted at the Options Treatment Center or other approved agency. The alcohol screening will be conduct by the Resource officer at East High School.

Type 3 Violations Organizing, hosting or having gatherings where the student knows there will be consumption of alcohol, or the use of controlled substances. Selling, providing, distributing alcohol or other controlled substances. Possession of a dangerous or concealed weapon. Theft greater than $250. Vandalism(criminal damage to property).

Type 3 Consequences 1st violation - up to 365 days and 40 community service hours. 2nd violation - up to 2 years and 80 community service hours. 3rd violation - no longer eligible for participation.

Special Notes The suggested penalties are recommendations only. The district reserves the right to impose a more severe penalty if deemed appropriate. Co-curricular penalties that have been imposed can only be served when a student is academically eligible. A non athletic suspension does not supercede an athletic suspension. If a student does not successfully complete an activity when serving a suspension, he/she must serve the penalty at the beginning of the next activity.

Expectations of Parents and Athletes

Parent and Player Expectations Parent and participant are to notify the coaching staff about any schedule conflicts that may occur well in advance of the season. Parents should notify coaches about special concern they may have regarding coaching expectations. Parents and athletes are expected to support the AASD CO – Curricular Code of Conduct year round and all team rules established by the coaching staff. Parents and athletes need to support all team members and the coaching staff. Parents need to give positive support at games for their son/daughter, their son’s/daughters teammates and the coaching staff. Athletes and parents are expected to have a great work ethic at practice and in games. All participants are expected to have a great work ethic in practice and games.

Appropriate Concerns Athlete/Parent May Address with Coaching Staff The treatment of the athlete mentally and physically. Ways to help the participant improve his/her performance and skill level. Concerns about the participants behavior in school/practice/games.

Areas That Are Not Appropriate For Parents To Discuss With Coaches An individual’s playing time. (This is a coaching decision based on practice and game participation). Team strategy. Play selection. The make up of the team and the decision as to who plays on a particular team. Coaches will not discuss other players on a team with parents.
