Annual Catch Estimates What are they ? “…are simply the total catches by species for a fishing fleet covering a calendar year“ Catch => METRIC TONS “Number of active vessels by size class” also required ACE are a WCPFC reporting obligation

Annual Catch Estimates WCPFC essential requirements (obligations) Annual catch by GEAR and SPECIES No. of ACTIVE Vessels by size class Calendar Year Main area is the WCPFC CONVENTION AREA Prepared for the NATIONAL FLEET The deadline is 30th APRIL each year How they were determined More details: http://www.wcpfc.int/doc/data-01/scientific-data-be-provided-commission-revised-wcpfc4-6-7-and-9 (as per slide)

Annual catch estimates provided for the WCPFC Convention Area

Annual catch estimates must be provided for the other areas in some cases. For example, ALB and SWO stocks are separated by the equator

Annual Catch Estimates Why ? Concise representation of actual catch Concise indication of the trends over time Indication of all data collected in the tuna fishery Snapshot comparison between years, fleets, gears, fisheries, etc. Used to produce economic indicators (value of catch) (as per slide)

CONSERVATION OF THE STOCKS Annual Catch Estimates Why ? DATA e.g. ACE CONSERVATION OF THE STOCKS ANALYSES Stock assessments SCIENTIFIC ADVICE MANAGEMENT ADVICE

Annual Catch Estimates How ? Check your data and meet with SPC to determine the best approach EXERCISE #1 Review estimates produced by DORADO web reporting EXERCISES #2 and #3a and #3b Consider revising estimates from previous years EXERCISE #4 Use your template from last year EXERCISE #5 Special attention to SHARK CATCH Estimates EXERCISE #6 -- with help from SPC (as per slide)

OUTPUT FROM EXERCISE #2 is used here (as per slide) OUTPUT FROM EXERCISE #2 is used here

OUTPUT FROM EXERCISE #3a & #3b (as per slide) OUTPUT FROM EXERCISE #4

Annual Catch Estimates HOW ? Which category do you fit into ? Logsheet coverage in TUFMAN2 is very high Work through the EXERCISES Logsheet coverage in TUFMAN2 not so good See SPC (…and work through the EXERCISES) Very few data for my fleet SPC, please help me ! My domestic fisheries are complex None of the above see SPC

1 2 Annual Catch Estimates Raised catches – see Web Reports Generated by fleet for each target species The higher the coverage, the closer to reality See SPC if you this is relevant to you …

EXERCISES serve as a GUIDE ! Let’s get started ! This work needs to be completed by the end of the workshop ! Think about WHAT information/data you have and need Think about HOW you might do the work Think about what assistance you need from SPC You can start your work this afternoon ! EXERCISES serve as a GUIDE !
