Today Professional Work Managerial Work Line v. Staff

I. Professional Work Can you name some professions? What makes work professional? What does it mean to call someone a lawn care professional? How about a professional waiter or waitress? Is this what we are talking about here? Do they do professional work? In what sense do they or don’t they?

II. Managerial Work What makes work managerial? What do managers do? Is there any particular training or preparation that goes into making someone a manager?

III. Line v. Staff What are line managers? What are staff? What is their relationship in the organization? What is different in this relationship in professional organizations?

II. Gender-stereotyped professions Are there stereotypically male professions? How about female? What social purpose do those stereotypes serve? What are the sources of those stereotypes?

III. Women and Discrimination in the Professions How have women been discriminated against in the professions? What forms has such discrimination taken? How has this changed in the last 50 years? The last 10 years? Would professions be a better place for women (given the fact of discrimination) than other occupations? Why or why not?

IV. Gender-stereotypes in Management Are there stereotypically male management positions? How about female? What social function do those stereotypes serve? What are the sources of those stereotypes?

V. Women and Discrimination in Management Have women been discriminated against in the occupation of management? What forms has such discrimination taken? How has this changed in the last 50 years? The last 10 years? Would management be a better or worse place for women than the professions (given the fact of discrimination)?

VI. Professional and Managerial Work and Identity How does professional work relate to a person’s identity? How does managerial work relate to a person’s identity? How are they similar and how are they different?
