Epithets, Kennings, Imagery, and Alliteration Epithets and Kennings are poetic devices whose foremost purpose is to maintain the rhythm and meter of the poem. Epithets and kennings also present key attributes of characters, important values of the time, and descriptions of people and places. Imagery – one or more sensory details used to develop descriptions of a person, place, or object Alliteration – the repetition of initial consonant sounds while I ponder weak and weary
