Commonality Alec and Ian start the play as good friends and are often seen spending a lot of time together and playing imaginative games. As they grow up they drift apart and their differences become more obvious. Alec becomes obsessed with church and then school and Ian just wants a simple life.
The Extract “Aw well, that’s it then” This shows Ian’s disappointment that Alec has passed his exam. He is not very supportive. “That’s it” emphasises that Ian knows that this is the end of their close relationship as Alec is heading in a direction that he does not want to follow.
Rest of the play “ Ye need a trade” Ian is looking out for his cousin and does not want him to end up like Davie. He is trying to give him friendly advice and take on the role of a father figure as this is advice that has been passed down from Ian’s father, Billy.
Rest of the play “Ye never come oot wi us these days” This shows that Alec is choosing not to spend time with Ian and is exploring different interests like religion and education. This shows that Ian does not understand his actions and doesn’t see why they cannot hang out together like they did when they were kids.
