Dystopia Day 5

When you enter class… Take out your BNW Annotation, your LHS Grammar Guide, and a scratch sheet of paper

Warm-up When we study basic grammar in this class, I hope you don’t freak out. For each underlined word, identify the part of speech. Noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, interjection, and conjunction. Identify the main subject and main verb(s) of the sentence. What type of sentence is this?

Today Warm-up: Grammar Thesis practice Discuss BNW beginning and ending Add themes to unit guide HW: 1. 1984 Ending Annotation 5 comments per page… make them count!

Key Questions Context: Why did the authors write these books? Interpretation: What do their works communicate to readers? Connection: Why do we still read them today?

Thesis Practice PROMPT: Analyze the role of sex and romantic relationships in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Given this prompt, a writer should contemplate the subject before actually beginning the writing itself. Write down any observations you could make about sex and romantic relationships in Brave New World.

Thesis Practice OBSERVATIONS: -Everyone is very promiscuous. -Ashamed of celibacy. -Lustful. -Short-lived. -Empty (for Bernard, Lenina, and Helmholtz). -Attitudes about sex are conditioned (not inherent). -John wants love; Lenina wants sex. -Self-esteem is tied to sex (particularly for Lenina and Bernard).

Thesis Practice Now take those observations and instead of writing those as your thesis, ask yourself why any of the observations are important to a reader. In other words, what do the observations show us about people, life, society, etc.?

Thesis Practice Rate each of the following thesis statements… THESIS: In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World… A… sex is used solely for pleasure, as the world state aims to break down any interpersonal relationships or familial ties. B… the contrast between John’s desire for romantic love and Lenina’s shallow physical relationships demonstrates that human values and morals are merely the result of social conditioning. C… the abundance of sex in the World State demonstrates Huxley’s view that promiscuity leads to empty relationships. D… there are various romantic relationships that demonstrate Huxley’s message very well. E... In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley reveals through the empty sexual relationships of his characters that romantic desires for love, commitment, and bonding are inherent human qualities and necessities for true happiness.
