What is a Dichotomous Key?

Works by asking Yes No questions Look at the types of questions

Please copy the notes off the board.

Definition A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish. Keys consist of a series of choices that lead the user to the correct name of a given item.

Are you ready for the challenge? It’ s easy to read a key… But can you make one??? I would like to key you some tips to making a key.

Tips Make detailed qualitative and quantitative observations. Have a clear title for the key. Sometimes it helps to identify what something is. Did you know what a vamp was? The first question should separate half the items. When you are done have someone work the key. Hopefully they will find any mistakes….

Rip a piece of tape off, and please name your Shoe a crazy Name like… Joey The Gr8t A trainmazing Don’tmesswithtable5

Your Goal is to Classify 16 pieces of Candy!
