Presentation transcript:

Snapshots of American Media On June 28, 2012, the United States Supreme Court ruled that many provisions of the Affordable Care Act (the health care law that is referred to as Obamacare) were constitutional, including the controversial “individual mandate,” which requires the uninsured to purchase health insurance. In general, Republicans opposed the act while Democrats supported it. The following screenshots were taken within hours of the ruling.

First we’ll look at The Drudge Report and The Huffington Post First we’ll look at The Drudge Report and The Huffington Post. These are independently operated news websites that are known to have strong conservative or liberal bias (see if you can figure them out).

And now from 24 hour cable news networks…

When I returned to most websites or refreshed the browser, I found that little if anything had changed. But 15 minutes after the first Fox News screenshot, I returned to Fox News and found a different cover story, and so took another screenshot (next slide)

An hour or so later, Fox News had switched its cover image again, while the other websites remained the same. The next slide is a screenshot taken about two hours after the Supreme Court’s decision.

Lastly, here are images from the websites for widely respected newspaper.
