Influences on the Constitution
Presentation transcript:

Modern democracy takes form The English Bill of Rights influenced the development of modern democracy around the world, especially the idea of individual rights and liberties. Ideas found in English Bill of Rights were adopted by France and the future United States.

Declaration of the Rights of Man (France) Adopted by France's National Assembly in August 1789 Incorporates the idea of "natural rights”, i.e. the rights of man are universal Fundamental document of the French Revolution The adoption of the “Declaration” signaled the beginning of a global decline in absolute monarchies, replacing them with republics and liberal democracies.

US Bill of Rights First 10 amendments to the US Constitution Amendments added to the Constitution provided specific protections: Personal freedoms and rights Limits on government's power in judicial proceedings Declares that all powers not specifically given to Congress by the Constitution are for the states

Corroboration Exercise What democratic principals and ideas do these documents have in common? Directions: Assign group member to focus on one document. Write down and answer the question above by listing the (1) common principle or idea, (2) and the document and article or amendment where it is found. Each group member should write down similarities on a separate sheet of paper. Be prepared to share your results.
