Topography

Local Climate Precipitation: 4 inches a month Goes from 60 degrees in January to 97 degrees in July; in December, it goes back to 60 degrees. Coolest Month: January Warmest Month: August Highest known temp: 112 degrees Fahrenheit

Biome Factors Temperate Grassland Dominant Vegetation: Grass and shrubs Climate: Temperate; Semi-arid to semi-humid Soil: Fertile, rich nutrients and minerals Animals: Large, grazing mammals as well as birds

Native Plant: Chinquapin Oak The following traits help this oak survive in Austin, TX: High water use efficiency Drought tolerant Also, the following plant would be useful in our new city plan because it can withstand the extreme heat Austin faces, especially during the summer.

Native Animal: Indigo Bunting Bird Migratory during breeding season; migrates at night Diet: Insects during summer; seeds during the winter Communicates through sharp buzzes It uses the heat to it’s advantage and migrates at night when it’s cooler For our city, it would help know when certain areas are in danger through it’s sharp chirp.

How Austin Acquires Energy, Food, Water, Etc. We have urban farming, which helps save space and uses the Sun in order to grow crops; our crops grow vertically. We acquire food from our farms; we grow a variety of products. We acquire our water from Colorado; we have an agreement with them that we can divert water from their river.

What Do They Do With Waste? They’ll roll their garbage bins to the bottom of the driveway and we will collect it on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will collect recycling on Mondays and Thursdays. In addition, we will have people sift through the garbage and see if any of the materials can be recycled.

Transportation We will have many cabs and buses to help limit the amount of pollution released into the air. Also, our city plan will consist of a newly developed trolley system; it’s cheap, and very efficient.

Where People Live and Work We will have many tall buildings that are pretty disperse throughout so that it does not create it’s own microclimate. People who live in Austin might also work within the same building; there are a lot of people who work as businessmen, so in our plan the businesses will be on the first few floors; housing will be on the upper floors.

Areas for Wildlife We plan on developing a park that will help preserve the plant and animal species in Austin and can also act as a tourist attraction.
