Presentation transcript:

Irregular Words What is an irregular word? Contains _____________________________ the student does not know Two kinds of irregular words: ____________________: a word that is considered irregular at an early point in a reading program is not irregular at a later point Once students learn all letter-sound correspondences (e.g., /ee/) in a word, the word in no longer irregular (e.g., meet) _____________: some words will always be considered irregular (e.g., you, said)

Four Guidelines for Introducing Irregular Words _____________: words that appear more often should be introduced earlier _________________: words similar to each other should be separated _______________: if a word has elements that will be taught later will result in students being able to decode the word, consider delaying its introduction as an irregular word _______________: introduce related words together (e.g., walk, talk, chalk)

Introduction of Irregular Words Three steps in initial procedure for introducing irregular words: Teacher tells student new word and ________________________. Teacher has students _____________ the word then say it. Teacher gives individual turns on Step 2.

Modified Introductory Format This format can be used when the students know the ___________________-: Teacher tell the student the new irregular word “This word is…” Student __________ the word Student ________ the word Student ________ the new word again

Application Exercise pg. 102-103 (Q1, Part A)
