B.SOC.SC. (HONS) SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY FINAL YEAR 2018-2019

THE FINAL YEAR In the final year, students write a 40 credit dissertation, and choose a further 80 credits from the list of available options. In order to keep the balance correct, two options must be taken in the first semester and two options in the second.

STUDENTS WHO STUDIED ABROAD IN SECOND SEMESTER LAST YEAR Students who studied abroad in the second semester of their second year will need to take the following full year courses: Dissertation (40 credits) Anthropological Theory (20 credits) They then choose three final year options, at least one in each semester, and the third can be in either semester.

FIRST SEMESTER OPTIONS SOAN30051 AN ANTHROPOLOGY OF SCIENCE, MAGIC AND EXPERTISE. SOAN30111 ANTHROPOLOGY OF DEVELOPMENT AND HUMANITARIANISM SOAN30241 ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE ARCTIC SOAN30391 THE GOOD LIFE: ANTHROPOLOGY OF ETHICS SOAN30811 ANTHROPOLOGY OF VISION, MEMORY AND THE SENSES

SECOND SEMESTER OPTIONS SOAN30062 MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY SOAN30402 SPACE AND POWER IN CENTRAL ASIA SOAN30662: BLACK IDENTITIES AND CULTURES IN LATIN AMERICA SOAN30792: SCREENING CULTURE

COURSE UNIT SELECTION Course Unit Selection opens in July – date tbc. Students are asked to complete their selections by 6th August. Course Unit Selection is done on the Student System (not Blackboard). Early selection is recommended because, once the room limit is reached, the courses will close. You then have to join the Waiting List. Popular courses fill up very fast!

CHANGES TO COURSE UNIT SELECTION Make your selection as early as possible, making sure that you have no more than 70 credits in one semester, and no less than 50 credits. Subject to the availability of places, changes can be made up to the end of the second week of teaching in each semester. Changes cannot be made after you have submitted any assessed work for a course.

REMEMBER….. CHOOSE YOUR COURSES EARLY… YOU CAN CHANGE COURSES, AS LONG AS THEY HAVE SPACES, UP UNTIL THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK OF LECTURES IN BOTH SEMESTERS. BEING ON A WAITING LIST DOES NOT GUARANTEE A PLACE ON A COURSE – HAVE A PLAN B.

ENJOY YOUR FINAL YEAR AT MANCHESTER. FINALLY….. ENJOY YOUR FINAL YEAR AT MANCHESTER.
