The Lord’s Prayer (Matt 6:5-15) The Pattern Of Prayer The Lord’s Prayer (Matt 6:5-15)

Recap from last week: Last week we studied about: “The Purpose & Power of Prayer” James 5:16 (b) The prayers of the righteous person is powerful and effective… Luke 11:1 The disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray!”

Jesus didn’t just have a good prayer life but a life of prayer! He prayed often, all night, early in the morning, before important decisions, alone, in lonely places, with loud cries & tears…Still lives to intercede for us

1. Prayer was God’s idea: Ask, ask, ask! (you ‘have not’ because you ask not…) 2. He expects us to pray…(WHEN you pray…) 3. Prayer is our opportunity to partner with God (and to exercise our authority Psalm 115:16) 4. Dependency on God…(apart from me you can do nothing)

Today’s Topic:The Pattern of Prayer Luke 11:1 When the disciples asked Jesus “Teach us to pray”, he taught them what we commonly know as “The Lord’s Prayer”. Its NOT a magic prayer, but rather a model Matthew 6:5-15 Starts with “when you pray…” Heart checks: Don’t do it to be seen of men & don’t think its in the repetition! He starts in verse 9 “This then is how you should pray…”

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name Your kingdom come, Your will be done On earth, as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors  And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

It starts and ends with praise… Divided into 2 sections Focus on God Focus on our needs “YOUR” before “US”… Your name, Your Kingdom, Your will!

Our Father who is in Heaven There is a plurality…our…us…we… We are His children, He is our Heavenly father…We are a Family Romans 8:15 “you have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” We come to him not as slaves but sons!

Hallowed be your name “Hallowed”: Sanctified, Holy – Set apart from the profane – Set apart from all other (like no other) Unique in nature and character – Distinctly different …

Meditate on the Names of God Names of God = Character of God! ADONAI: “Lord” (Gen 15:2; Judges 6:15) EL ELOAH: "mighty, prominent” Neh 9:17 ELOHIM: “Creator, Mighty, Strong” Gen 17:7 EL SHADDAI: “God Almighty,” Gen 49:24 EL ELYON: “Most High" (Deut 26:19) – EL ROI: "God Who Sees" (Gen 16:13) EL OLAM: "Everlasting God" (Ps 90:1-3) EL GIBHOR: “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6)

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide (Gen 22:14) Jehovah Rapha: The Lord Who Heals (Ex 15:26) Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Our Banner (Ex 17:15) Jehova M'Kaddesh: The Lord Sanctifies Lev 20:8 Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Our Peace (Jud 6:24) Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness Jehovah Rohi: The Lord Our Shepherd (Psa 23:1) Jehovah Shammah: The Lord Is There (Ez 48:35) Jehovah Sabbaoth: The Lord of Hosts (Is 1:24)

Your Kingdom Come, Your Will be done On Earth, As it is in Heaven Your Kingdom come in our midst… Kingdom is the King’s “Domain” You are King, You have rulership, domain, authority Let your rule come, let your sovereignty come… Not futuristic “Come” is progressive…keep coming Is he King in our situation / life today? Rom 14:17 Kingdom of God is Righteousness, Peace & Joy in the Holy Spirit

‘Let your will be done’ is a submission to His rulership In my life and in my heart, as it is in heaven, in my home and in my church as it is in heaven…in my city, in my nation… Heb 5:7 “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission”.

We will stop here today and continue the rest of the study on the “Pattern of Prayer” Next Sunday!

Give us this day our daily bread… Asking for our daily needs boldly Phil 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 1 John 5:14,15  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors Matthew 18:23-25 The parable of the unmerciful servant 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him 26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. 29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” The Kingdom of heaven is like this: One man’s debt of 10,000 bags of gold was cancelled. But he could not be merciful to the guy who owed him 100 silver coins! That man was punished and what he owed was demanded from him.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil Broader meaning of the word temptation: trial, test, same word as used in Matt 4:1 & James 1:2 God Does Not Tempt Us – He never will He tests us…so we can mature But with every test there is always grace, help, and a cheat sheet!

James 1:13-15 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me James 1:13-15 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

1Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Jesus the High Priest Heb 4:15 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Heb 2:18 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

2 Tim 4:17,18 I was delivered from the lion’s mouth 2 Tim 4:17,18 I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 2 Pet 2:9 the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials

Our part is to PRAY! We should pray for: Protection from the evil one every day Daily Victory over temptation We cast our cares…then we TRUST We wait in expectation We give Him glory for the victory!

For your’s is the Kingdom, the Power & the Glory for ever and ever! We finish also with praising His Hallowed name and greatness! Ending with rejoicing, and faith and the confidence in the King – who has the Kingdom, the Power and the Resources! For ever and Forever through all of etenity! We get up from prayer with an eternal perspective!
