Behind the Doors of History Carissa Pollack In Kannapolis Today I’m going to teach you about the history of Kannapolis. Mr.Helms

Mechanical Loom This is an old fashioned loom in Kannapolis when Mr.Cannon built his cotton mill. This is how towels and sheets and even clothes were made. Every body went and got their clothes, sheets, towels and pillowcases from the mill. And they were all made of cotton.

Hand Loom This is an old fashioned hand loom which was also used at the time. Women could use hand looms at their houses if they didn’t have enough money to buy from the mill.

Textile Museum The Textile Museum is a history museum that is still standing today. The Textile Museum has an old mechanical loom in the basement.

Important Facts The man who owned this land and sold it to Mr. Cannon’s great grandson and his grandson put this together. The reason Kannapolis was named Kannapolis is that it was named after Mr. Cannon. Kannapolis back in the day had seven, SEVEN! movie theaters.

ALL ABOUT MR.CANNON Mr.Cannon was the person to decide to not send the cotton to New England to be made into clothes and towels. He stated that we should make all the stuff that New England makes for us. That’s when Mr.Cannon amalgamated, or put together, all of his dad’s companies into one big business-CANNON MILLS COMPANY.

FACTS ABOUT CANNON MILLS Started in 1916 Ended 1962 25,000 workers Made 300,000 towels a day
