1. Hormones can make you grow to be nine feet tall. 2. Hormones can affect your ability to taste salty foods. 3. Hormones can make you very sensitive to high-pitched sounds. 4. Hormones cause a young man to begin to grow facial hair. 5. Hormones can help fight stress. 6. Hormones determine what color eyes you have. 7. Hormones can cause you to be allergic to milk. 8. Hormones can make your heart beat faster when you are scared. 9. Hormones can soothe you. 10. Hormones can cause your hands to tremble when you are nervous. 11. Hormones affect how much energy you have. 12. Hormones affect how fast or slow you read. 13. Hormones tell your body how fast it should grow. 14. Hormones give you the strength and energy to fight or run when in a dangerous situation. 15. Hormones cause your voice to change, especially in boys. 16. Endocrine System The endocrine system controls growth and affects emotions. AND sends messages to and from the brain (in addition to the nervous system)

Hormones Chemical messages sent by the endocrine system and produced by endocrine glands (aka ductless glands). Received only by the particular organ of the body they influence.

Hormones v. Neurotransmitters Both affect the nervous system Same chemical can sometimes be used as either (norepinephrine) Neurotransmitter: chemical is released right beside the cell it is to excite. Glands Pituitary Gland: near midbrain; secretes hormones to control the other endocrine glands. It’s controlled by the hypothalamus (monitors and sends messages to balance hormone levels).

Thyroid: produces thyroxine to stimulate certain reactions in body tissue. Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroxine causes people to feel lazy and lethargic Hyperthyroidism: Too much thyroxine causes people to lose weight, lose sleep, and become overactive.

Thymus: processes a type of white blood cell (T-cells) that govern “cellular immunity”. They help cells recognize and destroy invading bacteria, virus, etc., abnormal cell growth such as cancer, and foreign tissue.

Adrenal Glands: release epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) when a person is angry or frightened. Increase heartbeat and breathing Heighten emotions Secrete cortical steroids which help muscles develop.

Pancreas: helps control the amount of sugar in your body Pancreas: helps control the amount of sugar in your body. It secretes the hormone insulin.

Reproductive Glands Testes: produce sperm and testosterone. Ovaries: produce eggs, estrogen, and progesterone Testosterone: helps decide the sex of a fetus, important in growth of muscle and development of male sex characteristics. Estrogen and Progesterone: regulate the reproductive cycle of females with varying levels throughout the cycle. These variances can cause PMS.
