Pilgrims: Fact or Fiction It’s Time To Play……… Pilgrims: Fact or Fiction

Fact or Fiction? The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 and the Pilgrims celebrated it every year thereafter.

Answer: Fiction The first feast was not repeated. In fact, the colonists didn't even call the day Thanksgiving. To them, a thanksgiving was a religious holiday in which they would go to church and thank God for a specific event, such as the winning of a battle. On such a religious day, the types of recreational activities that the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians participated in during the 1621 harvest feast-- dancing, singing secular songs, playing games— would not have been allowed. The feast was a secular celebration, so it never would have been considered a thanksgiving in the pilgrims minds

Before coming to America, the Pilgrims lived in Holland Fact or Fiction? Before coming to America, the Pilgrims lived in Holland

Answer: Fact Fact: In 1609, the Pilgrims left England due to religious persecution. Between 1609 and 1619, they lived in Holland. Eventually the group decided to leave because they felt that their children were becoming more Dutch than English. It was in 1619 that the Pilgrims departed for America on the Mayflower

Fact or Fiction? Pilgrims cooked turkey for the first Thanksgiving, so it became a tradition

Answer: Fiction Nobody knows if the Pilgrims ate turkey on the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until 1863, so many of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes were popular dishes of the 1800s, not the 1600s

The Pilgrims intended to land and settle in New York Fact or Fiction? The Pilgrims intended to land and settle in New York

Answer: Fact The Pilgrims were part of the Virginia Company, which had the rights to most of the eastern coast of the U.S. The pilgrims had intended to go to the Hudson River region in New York State, but they landed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts instead. Rough seas prevented them from venturing further south.

Fact or Fiction? The Pilgrims, for religious reasons, were required to wear black and white clothing only. They wore buckles on their hats, garments, and shoes.

Answer: Fiction When we think of Pilgrims we generally think of this style-------------------------- In actuality, Buckles did not come into fashion until later in the 1600’s. Black and white were worn only on Sunday and formal occasions. Women typically dressed in red, earthy green, brown, blue, violet, and gray, while men wore clothing in white, beige, black, earthy green, and brown

What Did the Pilgrims Believe? The Pilgrims wished to separate from the Church of England Predestination? The group disagreed with the church’s false ceremonies, non-Scriptural teachings, and superstitious rituals Example: Sacraments

Persecution King James came to power in 1604 The Church of England began to root out, prosecute, and jail those with different beliefs The Pilgrims first fled to Holland, and in 1620 went to America

Mayflower voyage 102 people were on the Mayflower 40 were Pilgrims (saints) and the other 60 were tradesmen (strangers) Their destination was upstate New York Due to bad weather conditions, they were forced farther north to Massachusetts

Plymouth Colony Plymouth never became a successful, money making enterprise The colony was eventually taken over by another company in 1691 The importance of the Plymouth colony was religious freedom, and the Mayflower Compact which established self- government

William Bradford

William Bradford The leader of the Pilgrims He was elected thirty times as Governor of the Plymouth colony He helped create the Mayflower compact, which established self- government in the colony
