Characteristics of Life Review

6 Characteristics Needed to be Living Made of cells Sense and respond to change Reproduce Have DNA Use Energy Grow & Develop

Made of Cells

Senses and Responds to Change STIMULUS: Anything that causes a reaction or change in an organism. Examples: Light Temperature Food

Homeostasis Internal balance – the changes an organism makes inside its body in response to changes in the environment

Homeostasis Examples Sweating when you get hot Shivering when you get cold Urge to eat when hungry Lizard laying in sun to get warm Bird puffing up when cold

2 types of reproduction – Sexual and Asexual Reproduces 2 types of reproduction – Sexual and Asexual What is the difference between the two?

Have DNA DNA controls the structure and function of cells AND contains all the cell’s information

HEREDITY the passing of traits from one generation to the next Example: My mom has brown hair so I have brown hair Non-example: My mom is good at piano so I am good at piano

Use Energy ENERGY: the ability to cause a change Example: wind, water, food, electric, elastic

Grow and Develop Cells can get larger Cells can divide

Decide which characteristic of life best applies to the following situations (There may be more than one)

A bacterium splitting in half

In winter birds migrate (move to another area)

A bear hunting

A plant getting taller

Tissue

Every generation of rabbits is brown

In the spring, dogs lose some of their fur

A plant absorbing light from the sun

A frog eating a cricket
