Optimising the management of intermodal transport services Dr.ing. Jan Tore Pedersen

Scope Themis: Advances Thematic Network on Optimizing the Management of Intermodal Transport Services 1.6 MEURO 4 years, starting April 2000 Advances Added Value Network Concerning European Shipping (Thematic Network) 1.9 MEURO 3 years, starting April 2000

THEMIS A “think – tank”, to provide ideas and solutions for the better infusion of “intermodal” transport applications into the overall idea of an efficient and user oriented ITS for Europe. i.e. contribute to the establishment of an open (European) ITS architecture THEMIS should be pragmatic, it should not be too futuristic, it should be realistic THEMIS should look at how existing systems can be used to realise an intelligent transport system THEMIS should indicate what the role of the EC could be to realize an efficient intelligent transport system.

THEMIS Partners NEI (NL) Transport economic research/policy advice TRD (GR) Management, logistics, business and transport consultants LogIT (NO) Consultant for intermodal transport and related IT ISSUS (DE) Research and training facility concerning sea transport TFK (DE) International transport research H/B (DE) Consultant for traffic engineering and management AUTh (GR) Transport research, telematic applications NLR (NL) Independent research institute in aerospace and related fields ARRC(UK) Research organisation (mainly rail) Marintek(NO) Marine technology research institute, including logistics

Themis Organisational structure

Advances Objectives Establishing a common understanding of Quality shipping among policy makers and the industry Identifying the missing elements needed for establishing Quality shipping operations as integral parts of European intermodal transport systems. Evaluating previous and ongoing research to clarify the availability of the required elements for Quality shipping. Initiating new research and development in order to close the gap between status- quo and the future quality requirements. Validating of practicality and viability of Quality shipping and Added Value elements. Disseminating the intermediate and completed results of relevant projects in an effort to provide an operational platform for the industry for adapting these new quality elements, as they are becoming available.
