Wall and Ceiling Treatments Moldings Wall and Ceiling Treatments

Chair-rail Molding about 32’ above the floor. This can be a single band of trim or multiple pieces built up using casing or band molding.

Crown Molding The band of trim where the ceiling and and walls meet. In rooms with high ceilings, large built-up crowns add elegence and scale.

Base Molding/Baseboards Protective and decorative trim where floor and wall meet.

Golden Mean Division of a line somewhere between ½ and 1/3 is the most pleasing.

Golden Rectangle A square room has been considered the most difficult room to design and is also the least pleasing to the eye. The Golden Rectangle is a rectangle whose proportion of width is 2:3 This proportion is considered the most pleasing.

Golden Rectangle Assignment: You have a room with the size of 24’x24’ Design a room using the Golden Rectangle

Golden Section The ratio of the smaller portion to the larger is the same as the larger portion to the whole. The progression 2,3,5,8,13,21,34, so on. For example 2:3 is the same as 3:7 Another pleasing ratio is 4:7 These ratios can help designers decide the room sizes and shapes as will as the most pleasing proportions for windows and fireplaces.

Golden Section Perhaps the most important application of these proportions in planning and furnishings lies in the relationship of sizes and areas.
