Support Your Child Through Key Stage 4 Geoff Huskinson Team leader – year 10 Science The Regis School

Welcome My name is Amelia Howland I have been teaching at The Regis School for 4 years and have been in post as key stage 4 team leader for around 18 months.

Science in Key stage 4 All students will take a minimum of 2 GCSEs in Science, some will take 3. Combined Science Trilogy – 2 GCSEs Triple Science – 3 GCSEs – Biology, Chemistry, Physics (This is taken as an option in year 10)

Possible routes – GCSE Combined Science Trilogy – 2 GCSEs Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics – 3 GCSEs – uses one option choice). (Standard route for most of our students).

Exam periods – GCSE There are now no GCSE exams in Nov/Jan All exams will be taken in summer exam period (May/June), in year 11 Students will sit 4 exams per GCSE No re-sits available

Practical Exam Each GCSE has a practical exam component, which is worth 25%. This will be based on the “compulsory practicals” that the students will all do throughout the 2 year course Triple Science students will therefore complete 3 practical exams, Trilogy students will complete 2.

Revision Guides Available through the school for 50% of the RRP (£9 per book which covers all 3 subjects). The slip needs to be returned by Friday 4th of November. If you miss the deadline please contact Miss Howland at: amelia.howland@theregisschool.co.uk

How to support your child Try to set aside 2 hours a week, every week, where your child sits and does work/revision. Purchase relevant revision guides/workbooks – available at a discounted price through school. There are also a huge range of FREE revision apps available on android/apple devices (iphones, samsungs, Nokias etc) – Get them to install one and use it regularly – e.g. when travelling in the car.

How to support your child Encourage your child to be aware of Science in the news – They could follow people on twitter, join IFL science on facebook etc. Encourage student to attend catch-up sessions and revision classes. Ensure your child has no unnecessary time off during year 10 and 11, particularly during exam/coursework periods.

Homework Expectations Students will be set 1 piece of Science homework per week If doing Triple Science this will be per Science (1 for biology, 1 for Chemistry, 1 for Physics) Please support the relevant sanctions if your child does not meet the expectations for their homework Additional homework books can be arranged by myself if you/your child wish.

Any Questions? I am now happy to take any of your questions. If you have any further questions at any time please email me: Geoff.huskinson@theregisschool.co.uk Or phone the school reception and arrange a call back.
