Poetry Analysis Using TPCASTT

We are taking notes today!! Bell Ringer Get a sheet of paper and draw cornell note format on it. We are taking notes today!! 

T is for TITLE Analyze the title first. What do you predict this poem will be about? We will reflect on the title again after we have read the poem. The next step is often omitted, but it is the most important!!!!

READ THE POEM!!!!

P is for PARAPHRASE Paraphrasing is putting something in your own words. After reading the poem, rewrite each stanza in your own words.

C is for CONNOTATION Analyze the literary & stylistic devices. apostrophe Analyze the literary & stylistic devices. What effect does the device have on the poem? Speaker? Why did the author use the device? ASSONANCE alliteration RHYME diction personification onomatopoeia simile implied metaphor meter HYPERBOLE direct metaphor

A is for ATTITUDE What is the attitude of the author? Speaker? How does the attitude affect the poem? What is the tone of the poem? What is the mood of the poem? How does the tone and mood affect the poem?

S is for SHIFT A shift is a change in the poem. What type of shift(s) occur? Time? Tone? Speaker? Mood? Etc. What is the effect of the shift(s)? What is the purpose of the shift(s)?

T is for TITLE (again) Reconsider the title. Now that you have read the poem and analyzed the poem….. What other meaning(s) does the title have? How does the new meaning affect your understanding of the poem?

T is for THEME Look at the other parts of TPCASTT. What insight are all of these working together to convey? What is the poet trying to say about life? Support your statement with textual evidence from the poem. What other texts have similar themes? What makes them similar? Use textual evidence.
